A visit to a NEW school

This morning, I was very aware of  the ferry horn. Heard, but not seen, due to the zero visibility in heavy snow squalls. Spring, as we know it in Canada. Not to worry; they’ve got radar, and I think they know the way to the nearest port.  Likewise, when the postal lady stopped by with a parcel, she obviously knew where she was going, even if the road/lane junction was masked.

Seeking clarity

Our legal system depends on clarity in decisions. When confusion exists, there is a higher body: the Supreme Court. Today, the SCC released the decree that should settle a major question for Canadians. The question:  “Is it legal to buy cheaper beer in a neighbouring province and bring it back home?”

Great personal mobility

I happened upon an editorial this afternoon (part of my quest to read everything) which pointed out something very important. There is no longer enough time in a day to keep up with the flood of new media. Here, I refer to movies, books, television… impossible to absorb all of it. The article went on to recommend adopting a strategy of selectivity. It doesn’t matter that you

Real maps for imaginary kingdoms

Imaginary kingdoms; I really shouldn’t fret about such things. Life is too short. However, a recent musing on an Irish website, about what title will the Queen bestow on her grandson and wife-to-be vexes me.  It seems that She still believes she has an empire, and can award privileges, willy-nilly.

Skating on very thin ice

Skating videos. From downtown Ottawa and downtown Quebec City. Who would have thought? It’s that freezing rain; removes friction from the equation, even though gravity is still in force. Our turn is scheduled for tomorrow morning, which is why I have pile all my recycling bags by the curb. Should the monthly truck arrive at the right time, I can learn the technique for industrial icebreaking.

My logbooks are here

I have a number of hobbies that are, simply, technical in nature. Nothing that others can’t handle. I mean, we accept that someone who wants to drive a car on a public highway has a minimum of experience, right? In my case, I put in a winter of driving around in small circles before passing a test.

The real signs of summer returning

Busy day by my measure. I decided that joining a small circle of acquaintances for breakfast would be a change from routine; after all, the winter seclusion has to end eventually. Off at the appointed time and I even remembered to throw in a cash stop, so that I can pay my winter bill (snow throw).

Understand (my) need to downsize

Accepting that this is the right moment to “downsize” isn’t clear to me. When our freezer conked out, back before the end of the last year, I saw replacement as something easy. Natural. I now understand that we no longer need to store for the coming famine. Plus, it’s cold outside, so if the refrigerator fails, we’ll simply rely on nature. With that lesson learned, we almost went off to the city to purchase our replacement; however, it was too cold. Ironic. Or the whimsy of a springtime snow squall.

The suppertime playlist

The dog might be smart enough to figure out which hand is holding a Milkbone, but when faced with two loaded fists, he’s helpless. That’s why we don’t send our pets to the higher seats of governance.

Turn the pages

There’s something about a good book. Although I’ve joined the modern era and adopted an electronic reader, there’s still pleasure in the written word… one page at a time. If interrupted, I can set my story aside, take care of the immediate and then return without missing a beat. Try that with a movie in an expensive seat.
