Turning back the clock, for a few hours

Two hours along, with a continuous feed of EDM from Deadmau5. I’m confused; it all sounds good, but none of it will be remembered five minutes from now. And as for the dancing, I kept that strictly metaphysical, so I’m not even strained. Time to move the dial (OK, the YouTube channel) to something different.

He used to live just across the way

Like two ships passing in the night. Literally. From my kitchen window, two huge passenger vessels, heading in diametrically opposite courses, under a full moon. We’re back into the period when a large number of tourists can see me waving, if they stop partying long enough.

Suspiciously minded, I am, I am

Suspicious minds are the single defence against the politicians of our society. Unsure? Let’s examine a few of the stories from this week.

Superb pouch technique

The view from the living room window changes constantly. The trees move. The bird feeders attract local colour. Sometimes, we even watch cage races.

First fish of the season

Summer. Is it the sand in your shoes, as you wander the beach? Or the uptick in license plates from the mainland? Perhaps, and this is just my own experience, it’s the food. You see, this is a place where the number of restaurants that are open in directly related to the temperature in the shade.  At the first hint of snow, a number of places put the shutters on the windows, clear the patio and then head off to a well-deserved vacation. Leaving the rest of us to forage for ourselves, generally in our kitchens.

A better chair

There now. Something else to cross off my list. This afternoon, I went to a book launching, in which I was involved… from A to Z, if you will. I am pleased that others found our production to be “like a book”, although when you hit close to 400 pages and bind it up with a cover and spine, there’s not much else it can resemble.

Politics, near and far

Following politics may seem like a fruitless pastime, particularly when the focus is on other countries. No vote allowed, etc. I try to keep up with my own nation, and the neighbour is always making a fuss about something, but the rest of the world? Eh.

Hazmat or no?

Perhaps I’ll need a hazmat suit, if current trends continue. I was asked to take the weed-whacker out for a test drive, making sure to subdue any new greenery along the foundation of the house. No big deal, except – what if I attract a tick. No, not an uncontrolled spasm. A tick. Small, sucks blood, likes to live in new greenery (apparently). I didn’t see any, but my socks kept my pant legs close to the shins.

How to get past a monotonous menu

Facing a monotonous menu for the next day or so, I realize that the picture on the package should not be used as a guide to taste. I’m into an oversize lasagna; the kind you purchase to feed a family of four. I figured “What the hey?” One person over four meals is just like a family of four doing things once, right?

More complicated than imagined

As a household, we’re really patient, or really silly. This whole winter has involved a ballet, every time the car went somewhere, as a broken door latch forced us to get in the back and reach forward to open the driver side door. Today, it was repaired. Not for free, but sometimes you have to accept that auto ownership involves money. And to be fair, we’re well into the sixth year with a smaller domestic model; very little extra expense.
