First fish of the season

posted in food |

Summer. Is it the sand in your shoes, as you wander the beach? Or the uptick in license plates from the mainland? Perhaps, and this is just my own experience, it’s the food. You see, this is a place where the number of restaurants that are open in directly related to the temperature in the shade.  At the first hint of snow, a number of places put the shutters on the windows, clear the patio and then head off to a well-deserved vacation. Leaving the rest of us to forage for ourselves, generally in our kitchens.

And so I watch for the notices that our local restaurants are warming up the grills. Today, our first trip of the season, down to Rick’s in St. Peters. The menu changes slightly, but the quality is a constant, which is why seeing a “for sale” notice on the local realtor site brings shivers of fear. Will there be less fish and chips in future.

For today, we went after the noontime rush had subsided, and were able to have a table inside without difficulty. That breeze still carries the ability to chill my skin; I want to be comfortably warm at mealtime. Before our order had been taken, some friends joined us (the flower lady and her flash). Upgraded us from “there to eat” up to “there to eat and chat”.

Yes, the food was good. Yes, we were out with enough time to do other things; the lawn has received its first cut of the season. Just think, we’re still in the hockey playoff season. An early start to summer.
