Drops keep falling on my head

Finally. Cold enough to change from my standard GORE-TEX to a full size parka. As they say in the commercials, “Now, that’s cold!”. The bus line decided to test my decision by sending the 255 along with a fifteen minute delay, and I hardly noticed. Except for my cheeks, but that’s not covered by the parka, in design or description.

If the snow isn’t moving sideways…

If the snow isn’t moving sideways, it’s not really winter. Might make a classic bumper sticker…

I was out doing dogtaxi and Dadtaxi today, and I was very aware of the season. From having to shovel out the driveway (even though the plow hadn’t passed), to picking which side streets were suitable for use, to wondering about the “interesting” vibration from the tires, this was not a day in summer. The vibration may bave been due to uneven snowpack in the mags (we were warned about that). Going along the autoroute, wondering if one of the wheels is going to pass me on the right or left wasn’t reassuring. The dog never noticed, but the son did.

Wandering from beach to headland

I stayed the course. I pulled wires,  by myself, and I checked for pilot lights on switches and in the end I restored network service to the weather station. All is good here. Now on to other emergencies.

More pulling the wires, to see where they go

Several hours into the spaghetti of the home network and my success level is still pinned on “failure”. However, I did learn a few things that may mean a solutionis just hours away. Such the life.

A sense of falling forward

Today, I spent my time falling forward. Thankfully, the earth rotates, and I never actually tripped. Good thing. What should have been a restful period was anything but.

What I can (and can’t) see

Made a change in my routine this morning, and went off to visit my favourite team of ophtalo specialists. I’ve been so involved with them for the past few years that I don’t even know the relevant term in English, so let’s use “eyes” if it helps. Anyhow, my vision is less than pristine. I’m not cut out to be a great scout, or an intrepid hunter. Instead, I wander from place to place, content not to bump my nose too often.

Why you shouldn’t steal trains

Please don’t interpret this as criminal intent. Instead, imagine it as a really neat simulator thing, or a great widescreen movie idea. Somewhere in Sweden, the cleaning lady proved that pushing a broom isn’t enough. There has to be more. Why not take the train for a joyride? I can understand her need for speed. And this wasn’t the planned outcome of her escapade. Before I show you the picture, remember not to try this at home. Those involved were trained (sic) professionals, meaning “paid to do the job”. Not THIS job, but sometimes things happen…

Intermittent is worse than broken

From where I sit, there is something worse than broken: intermittent. Go ahead, ask any tech (assuming honesty, as opposed to paid by the hour to determine the problem). The rules seem to bend.

Picking cookies by the flavour

When parents go out to buy cookies for their kids, how do they pick the flavour? When I was a kid, exotic meant those round ones with red jam inside. Nowadays, the flavour of the week is more apt to be “Irish cream”.  Which one is (or should be) an acquired taste for the four year old in the house? And don’t give me the line that these are adult cookies…

A virtual tin cup and sign

We’re not frozen into our houses, yet. For those that remember the Big Freeze, that’s good. The news has been warning that the heavy snow cover on our rooftops, should some rainfall occur, might lead to some costly repairs. I’ve eyeballed our place, and I think we’re safe.
