Job security

Some jobs are just so good that you can’t imagine anyone giving one up. Lodging, salary, transportation, a good pension plan. Fixed for life, as they used to say. In the case of the Canadian senate, it used to be for life. A textbook example of a sinecure. Go ahead, look it up. And today, someone with one of those top jobs in the world did quit, climbed into a helicopter and flew away. The man with almost no name. The Pope.

No clouds in my sky

The school board is heading into March Break. This guy isn’t. Instead, I’m pulling solo duty in the office. And I can handle that. Here’s how it works; I’m the support guy, for a building that will be almost empty. What can go wrong? I’ll come back in a fortnight and bring you up to date.

Fair weather friends

Call them “fair weather friends”. They met, about a year or so ago, while out for a walk. Not a quiet walk; rather, a stroll with pots and pans. Nothing to do with cooking, though. A bit of a tintamarre, if you must know. Friends, though, with great intentions for the future. Spring turned into summer, and they hung out, even managed to get on stage together for a song and dance routine. What others call an election.

A view of the river, for a select group

They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot. A phrase that held great musical meaning for my generation, even if I didn’t realize exactly what it meant. That part came as I got older. When I lived in the country, the city seemed so wonderful. Now that I live in the city…

What should I timeshift

The family is in crisis avoidance mode. What to do, this evening, given that the Oscars are on at exactly the same time as Republic of Doyle? There’s a PVR that I don’t know how to use, which will permit storing one of the two for timeshifted play. Shall we vote? Too early to call, but the Oscars will probably get the nod for the broadcast slot, given the time sensitive nature of their content. No fun to watch after reading the results in the local newspaper.

Hall Of Fame nostalgic

When there isn’t a movie worth the watch, seek out the music. And we did. From time to time, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame awards are available for view, or review. At least, music doesn’t come packaged with a “best before” date. Heard it before? Doesn’t matter. If I sing along, (again), it doesn’t matter. With enough practice, I will get the right words in the right order.

Hide the flashing blue LED

Some day, I hope that son #3 will forgive me. Or get his own place. His room is particularly well placed for “infrastructure” updates, and I keep finding nooks and crannies to store things that have fans and wires and flashing lights. Good thing he’s a sound sleeper.

Soap is soap is soap

The next time you purchase a detergent, remember that the odour, colour and degree of foaming are all calculated to enhance your satisfaction with the cleaning property. Nothing to do with reality. Feel better now? I’ve known that for a very long time. My father “made” shampoo in a factory. We received industrial quantities of the batch of the week. All an illusion. You pay to be fooled. The bottom line; check for the bargain.

Sleep deprivation as a study method

Catch me on the tail end of a long sleepness night, followed by a long sleepless day. Laugh at my nonchalance. I won’t care.

It’s in the genes

Easily distracted, why, yes I am. All it takes is a bit of political humour. And here in Canada, the distractions are never long in coming. Got a senator to show us “sober second thought”. Right! How about class warfare among those who want to be the ruler of a major political party. Lots of that going on. One day leads to another, and the constant in the equation is that somewhere a politician is acting out. Right, Toronto? Right, Quebec?
