Dinged doors and strange talents

The minor inconvenience of a leak over my desk, last week, was a polite warning that things sometimes go terribly wrong. Sometime overnight, the office down the hall had a relative deluge. From the ceiling, again, but this time they had to clear the room and call in the professionals to restore order. Blame it on the weather, or the age of the building; water damage is still not much fun for the parties involved.

The optimism of a new name

The walk to the bus, this morning, was a study in gravity. Praying for gravity. Or sticky feet. More ice, everywhere. As I mentioned (elsewhere), if the weather people insist on freezing rain, they should follow things up with sandstorms. Unlike the city, where pedestrians are part of the “forgotten class”. How is it that cars, with four rubber paws, get full protection from slippy spots, but walkers… not so much?

Bumping the problem up a level

I have a little story to tell you, with a happy ending. It involves my workplace phone system, although I can’t name the company that supplies us. (For those of you saying “Tell us!”, I can’t.) Anyhow, we have about 500 users, and the whole thing is a huge computer programming nightmare. The control screens are reminiscent of tax forms, if that helps build an image.

Upgrades (my life)

Too early to tell if it is “better”, but the new router is in place, and I’m connected with several devices. The procrastination on this job was severe, but with a couple of hours without interruption, we’ve gone from G to N.

Live from the treadmill

Weekends are predictable. Wake early. Fetch the loaner dog. Spend the day opening and closing the front door. At a certain point, while in need of distraction, go for groceries. Prepare (mentally) for another week at work. Sleep. Come next weekend, rinse and repeat.

The illusion of home delivery

Home delivery is wonderful. Be it the newspaper, bags of milk, posted parcels; all good. Why then, do I have to accept the delivery by proxy of various courier firms? A lot of stuff is brought, almost to the house, by those big trucks with logos. Please pay attention to the “almost”.

Cheap descaler

I don’t party like I used to, come the weekend. Here, with a Friday night to spend as I wished, I opted for a last minute run to the store to buy tissues and vinegar, followed by my annual purchase of tax return software and a book return at the public library. I now know my online PIN, so I can reserve books from the safety of my home.

The dog is spark shy

Another documentary on D iscovery Channel, this time dealing with unidentified flying stuff. The bottom line seems to be that there’s a rational explanation for just about everything. As for the rest, well… pity the photos aren’t better, eh?

Convincing old gear to play a modern game

Every hobby has a version. Extreme hobby. Wherein you push the limits of your game, or try to do things that the original game did not include. In my case, I spend a lot of (paid) time keeping other people’s computers “running”, so it only makes sense that my free time is spent pushing my limits. For example, the fun of taking an older computer and upgrading it to something more recent.

Explaining the missing tiles

The drip from the ceiling (of my cubicle) seemed to be dried up, so I packed up from the loaner cubicle and returned home. Oddly, the keyboard would not work, despite my best intentions and attention. Just about ready to move to plan B (actually, there is no plan B for such things) when the guy with the ladder showed up. HVAC specialist…
