Upgrades (my life)

posted in technology |

Too early to tell if it is “better”, but the new router is in place, and I’m connected with several devices. The procrastination on this job was severe, but with a couple of hours without interruption, we’ve gone from G to N.

First the details. I’m a supporter of the Tomato firmware project, and my want list for a router upgrade included N and IPV6. Just because. Finally, a product that was compatible and packed with features appeared on my radar. The Asus RT-N66U, also known as the Black Knight. The box sat, and I studied. No need to brick things. And now the job is done. Without incident. I’d even do it for a friend, if asked (it’s a simple process).

What did take more time than I expected was finding a pair of screws that could be used to hang the router from the printer cabinet, and a screwdriver that would fit those screws. Not obvious. The Dremel tool provided pilot holes, and the recabling required a restart to the cable modem, but supper is over, and the easy part is done. Left: rebuilding the static IP list, trying to attach a hard drive for network storage, and another round of sorting out the bird’s nest of wires that keep the curious away from the computer corner.

Had someone come in with their personal disaster this afternoon. A 1TB portable drive, dead. All the data… what data. I tried; went so far as to disassemble the drive case (hate doing that when warranty service is involved). No joy. I sent off an email (with suitable sad demeanor) and resolved to never commit everything to something. Resolution already broken.
