Intermittent is worse than broken
From where I sit, there is something worse than broken: intermittent. Go ahead, ask any tech (assuming honesty, as opposed to paid by the hour to determine the problem). The rules seem to bend.
Got home from work and discovered two machines had abandoned the network. Wired machines, so it came down to that switch in the basement that I’d bought at the local surplus store for a tenspot. For sure. And in a fit of “get it fixed”, I was off to big box land to purchase a new switch, for not much money. Home again, plug things back together and… no joy. Or rather, some joy, periodically returning to the state of useless junk.
I’m not going to fixate on the problem. For now. Maybe by the end of the week, when I’ve caught up on my sleep and have assistance, I’ll tug on wires and try to approach things scientifically. In the meantime, the weather will remain constant in my virtual world.
Down on the Island, a woman has been refused EI benefits, because she doesn’t own a car. Oddly, that wasn’t an issue while the government was collecting from her pay cheques over the last while. Now, the official “reason” is that she is not available for work within an hour’s distance of her home, as determined by average highway speeds.
I wonder if she claimed that her religion was the reason. As in, her particular beliefs required that she abstain from mechanical transport. It works for other (not named) groups. The larger issue is that the government recently changed “the rules” in the game. And when you change the rules, fair play is left (if you will) by the roadside.
