A small comparison

Bigger is better, right? Bet the gang that were onboard the Titanic thought so, at first. Later, not so much. Since we’re into the week to remember, here’s a comparison of then vs now. I’m not sure if the Oasis has been this far up the river, but it would sure be cool to see something that big.

Content with my weekend

Partly need, partly perception. As my four day weekend winds down, I’m content. I’m ready to return to my daytime role tomorrow, without stress. An unexpected reprieve from the treadmill.

What’s in a name?

What’s in a name? Depends on who is calling, I guess.

When we buy new cars, the last thing on our list is “changing the name”. Ditto for a move to a new place (unless you either discover the site, or have enough cash to swing the local mentality. If you read a book, the name remains the same (although if you write it…) A new member of the family; now it’s time to shake the dice.

Saving to buy an air freshener

Just in time for the long weekend (and the two week vacation that follows), the government has announced the end of funding for CAP sites and Katimavik. The former provided public Internet access across Canada, and the latter showed a generation the value of public service. Not any more. The savings from closing the CAP access should pay for something more important; say, a pine tree shaped air freshener for one of those new jets. And why allow people to work for (almost) free, when you’re “creating jobs for Canadians”. Unfair competition.

A night to remember

A century ago, television missed the story. Too soon to get the whole contraption up and running. The intention, obviously, is to make up for it, this time around. I’m in the middle of a Titanic marathon.

Magic pads and more memory

Buying a new computer means accessorizing. I guess that happens in other areas, but since we’ve drunk from the magic apple juice container, our shopping involves the genius crowd. I learned that when the store doesn’t have a given item in stock, the genius will offer advice. Tonight, we were told to seek what we wanted on eBay.

Cost overruns

A day later, and my mental health has improved. Still need a vacation, but the panic that there might not be one, (really really soon) has passed. All it took was getting “caught up” in my cubicle.

Perhaps I should eat

When I’m already giving my 100% at something, what comes next?

Maybe it’s time for a vacation. Out of pride (in myself), I’ve made a point to give what I can in terms of effort. The result is that more of the collective need seems to be gathering in my cubicle. No free desk space any more. The floor is at a premium. I lift my feet very carefully, given the risk of an ankle becoming ensnared in the tangled cables. And summer seems so far away.

Hunting for minty bunnies

Sometimes, what I thought you said wasn’t what you meant. There: I’ve summarized language. And in my world of two (similar but very different) languages, I’m not always in the loop. The following story will come back to haunt me, so I’ll be preemptive.

Availability of maps for the old school

As we’re forced to move from 32-bit to 64-bit versions of our favourite software, I lift my virtual hat to the gang at Google. Today, they released an 8-bit version of Google Maps, for the cohort of “old technology”. Here’s the view of the Maritimes.
