Changes in the world, from where I stand

For the record: if you meet up with someone that you haven’t seen in close to a quarter of a century, and the conversation picks up like it was only days ago, that person should be sorted into the friend pile.

Relative utility and crankiness

There are days where my utility in the workplace is … questionable. Today, the highlight of the afternoon was my verification that the videoconference unit went into standby mode after the requested delay. For the record, the camera did it’s sleepy dance two minutes early. If I hadn’t been there, the question would still remain.

Obfuscation

This is not a test. Do you understand everything you read? I enjoy reading, and I do make an effort to “catch the drift” intended by the author. Sometimes, I just can’t catch it… the following text is copied from a news article, so I’m calling fair use. Read the rest of this entry »

The dog and new friends

Going to bed at a “later than usual” time seems to disturb my normal sleep pattern, leading to insomnia. Unfortunately, going to bed at an “earlier than usual” time has exactly the same effect. I’m doomed to a life than misses prime time.

Can I borrow your anteater?

The conclusion was foregone, inevitable, predictable. What with the onset of warm weather, and a need to look out and see my own private lake, I went to the pool store this afternoon. Some time (perhaps as early as next weekend) a professional team will arrive with the necessary tools and tradecraft, and within the day I’ll be ready to start refilling the restored basin.

An intrusion, or an escape?

With the car back from its little vacation east of here (overnight in Charlevoix), the Saturday shuffle began. Funny how our schedules are busier when we’re not at work. For a change, things were running on time, and after a warning that there was some delay at the transformation factory, I took a break at home.

In praise of competent retailing

Don’t take poor service for granted. Instead, accept that there are winners in the world. Today, I found one.

Imagining a cheap substitute for the real thing.

Doing things, ourself, on a limited budget? Have you noticed that when the “real thing” isn’t available, you start to mentally substitute unrelated objects? Was your grandfather also a blacksmith?

The marathon will finish, soon…

Tonight another American Idol will be presented to the world (as if it cared). Two hours of mixed entertainment, faintly reminiscent of the work done by Ed Sullivan. It should be noted that many of the guests this evening ALSO appeared on his program. Guess the demographic shift in favour of the Boomer is real.

There’s a cable car where?

I need to get out more.

Like so many of my generation, I grew up with a steady diet of adventure movies (often based on a war that was larger than life) with all the associated props and super machines. A case in point: the cable car. Where Eagles Dare is a classic example, with a fight to the finish inside the dangling capsule, followed by a plunge to the canyon/valley floor. No idea how they actually shot the footage.
