There’s a cable car where?

posted in humour, travel |

I need to get out more.

Like so many of my generation, I grew up with a steady diet of adventure movies (often based on a war that was larger than life) with all the associated props and super machines. A case in point: the cable car. Where Eagles Dare is a classic example, with a fight to the finish inside the dangling capsule, followed by a plunge to the canyon/valley floor. No idea how they actually shot the footage.

Imagine my surprise to learn that a major rescue operation took place over the long week. Dozens of people (OK, tourists), trapped for hours after a mechanical failure. Lowered by pulley. High tension (for the tourists). And all just 5 km from my front door. What? A cable car, within jogging distance? There for the last twenty years? Did I miss my invitation to be terrified?

Cable car

I’m going to check this out with the kids, and try to find out why we’ve never risked our lives. And now that things have been repaired, when are we going to turn this into a family occasion. Terror with the ones I love.  Maybe we can bring video cameras and get a start on the “story of our lives”. I can plan the opening sequence before we ever reach the ticket booth.

I watched the news coverage, and the tourists all seemed to be enthralled with their great Canadian adventure. I want something similar. No fear of heights will interfere (I’ll simply close my eyes during the really scary parts)> Just like in the movies.
