An ode to restoration

Back in high school, I remember reading books about kids that restored old cars. The hot rod type of car. It seemed like a really neat idea, except that I never came across a car that wanted my care and attention. Probably why I’ve never owned a car (although having a public transit system in the city also plays a part). I’m still impressed by those that can look at a rusting hulk and then bring things back to a state of roadworthiness.

Taxed time

With more than a full day of slack time, I’ve completed the four “declarations” of income. I feel empowered. And I feel like celebrating, which is silly. This is nothing more than bureaucratic nonsense. The two tiers of governance know exactly how much I’ve earned. They know, to the penny, how much they owe me. After all, my payments were made in full, and the excess will be remitted to me, without interest. There’s something fundamentally flawed, here.

Simple tool success and failure

I’ve got a collection of bicycle pumps in the basement. A collection built with good intentions and poor sense. And since I’m slow to learn, I went out this morning and added yet another one. For a tool that is used so infrequently, there’s  not much staying (or pumping) power.

A slight reduction in consumption would suffice

After calculating the risk involved, I’m still going to poke fun at the cries of despair from certain students. Not about assignments, or impending examinations. Rather, their anger at proposed tuition increases, amounting to about a dollar a day, over the total time required to complete a bachelors AND a masters degree. Five years, if you’re counting.

Syndication breeds familiarity and contempt

Syndication: the feature of network television that I love to hate.

Let’s face it; good comedy bears being watched more than once. It’s the “more than” which needs precision, and as soon as a program gets thrown into the schedule as a hole-filler, all control goes out the window. A case in point, for me, is The Big Bang Theory. I love the show. But now that the spot between 7 and 8 pm. is good for two or more episodes a day, I’m starting to get familiar with things. Too familiar.

Forget compromise

I shouldn’t have mentioned that the students were meeting with the government. Less than 40 hours after the start, the train has derailed. Things are back to confrontation without compromise, and we may be facing a long summer of discontent. Before a winter of discontent. Just so you know. Meanwhile, in the ROC (rest of Canada) university is winding down the academic year. Examination period ended last week, and the final marks will be posted real soon now. Life as it should be.

Is there a political gene?

Oh for those kinder, gentler times. Back when a community had one newspaper and one radio station. Back when the news was devoid of political content. Because, based on the way my blood pressure climbs each time I hear about another gaff by the elected elite, I’m going to die from apoplexy.

Worth something to somebody

Go figure. Someone, somewhere stops manufacturing something and all of a sudden the price goes through the ceiling. What about obsolete, or “too many to count” in the stockroom?

The music of videogames

In this house, videogames have been part of the lifestyle (for others in the family), for years. I suspected, but never had confirmation until this weekend, that is was mainly because of the music.

I’m drawn, as a moth to a flame

If only I could live in the big city, for a day. It would have to be a particular day, and I’d want to revert to a normal lifestyle by the next morning, but a wish is allowed.
