Is there a political gene?

posted in education, pets |

Oh for those kinder, gentler times. Back when a community had one newspaper and one radio station. Back when the news was devoid of political content. Because, based on the way my blood pressure climbs each time I hear about another gaff by the elected elite, I’m going to die from apoplexy.

Let’s face it. It’s not that we cogently elect criminals to government. I think it’s deeper. There may be a gene (the political gene) that drives people to forego public service and make the decision to lie, cheat, act in a political way. Reminder to self: check with a poly sci major to see if it ever comes up in the course load.

The dog had another hyperactive afternoon.  Managed to sweep part of my radio station from in front of the window (nothing broken, but gravity is still a force to be reckoned with). Managed to soil the floor in four different sections of the house. Managed to look guilty when confronted. I guess he’s been down this road before.

Oddly, after an episode, he is also hyperobedient. Sit, stay, shake a paw. Nothing missed. A model citizen. Akin to a politician.

The government (provincially) has agreed to meet with the striking student body. Or at least the leadership. According to the students, they are negotiating. According to the government, they are discussing. Methinks they can’t both be right on this one. The question has been raised – can you save a semester when ten out of the fourteen weeks of instruction have been compromised? Should a student settle for far less than the best? Is a credit nothing more than a tick mark on the list of degree requirements?
