Almost a diploma

Seems like ages ago, now. I pledged a token amount of money toward the eventual “making of a movie” for some local talent. Today, in the mail, an envelope. Inside, stickers. I guess it must be the thought that counts.

Everything is history, eventually

Early on in life, I made a valiant effort to avoid studying history. Didn’t work out well for me, because the subject is everywhere. Better to accept that my species tries to remember and revisit every moment of existence, and then to pass that plate of hash around the table to others. You never know who might be hungry for a spoonful of memories. I’m not part of an oral tradition, exactly, so I find my stories where I can. Books, in large part. Inevitably, in cinema.

Proof that times have changed

As the news came up, I realized just how much times have changed. The Prez just fired the Director (of the FBI). Now that would not have happened, back when J Edgar was in the office. No reason has been given, but let’s take it as a sign that things are chaotic in that big, white mansion with the fence all around. I’m looking forward to late night TV, for the usual explanations.

Minimal largesse

Let’s hear it for the signs of spring. Birds reappearing, on schedule. Flowers, popping up of their own accord. OK, in the case of the tulips and croci, there was an initial planting by the resident gardener, but now the autopilot has kicked in. I can see the difference, from day to day. Colour, where there was little before. All good.

A post-apocalyptic menu in mind

Look outside. Not today, too much fog (if this was an airport, etc), but maybe tomorrow. The wind is blowing steadily, and whatever precipitation is falling hasn’t been registering in the rain gauge. Blowing sideways. The dog set the pace for the day, reminding me that naps are good for everything.

The sirens’s call

Homer warned me. About the sirens’s call, I mean. Enticing enough to have me shoal up on unseen rocks. Or to bleed my wallet… In this case, I’m referring to the subscription site, Ancestry. Where all my questions will be met with little green leaves,  growing my research trees from tiny shrubs into mighty oaks.

Watching the birds (watching me)

With the flood photos flooding in from Ottawa and Montreal and other points uphill from here, I have to admit something. The areas don’t look much like their associated maps.

Isn’t everything pre-existing?

I don’t get it. That whole thing about being created equal, etc? Hard to apply it in view of that alternate species known as a Republican. Almost dystopian, to watch them “at work”. Today, one of the two major sections of American governance, the Congress, voted to alter their fledgling health care system. Among the big things, a decision to disallow pre-existing conditions when paying for assurable services.

All quiet on the car, once again

Unlike yesterday, where my awakening was too early for my own good, I didn’t roust out today until the telephone rang. The car was ready, and I was the anointed one. Get dressed, walk up the way and pay what was due. At least the temperature was up; no danger of frostbite. Car repairs cost what they cost, but the fee schedule locally is very (very) reasonable. Besides the “support your local merchants” feel good part, the only repairs effected are those required. I know, we’ve tried to see if there could be other jobs to get done. Nope. Our shocks are just fine.

Guessing at menu choices

Remember the kid that played the role of the wizard in nine movies? The one with the glasses and the crazy bolt scar? I knew you would. He took a chance; some people never escape their persona in later movies. In his case, he did. After watching two of the recent efforts, I feel qualified to say that “typecast” isn’t among his weaknesses. A villain AND a skinhead?
