Records and a nation by the numbers

Sony has decided to get back into the record business. Real records; vinyl. Of course, what goes round doesn’t always come round. The company didn’t mothball the facilities from before, so they’re reinventing the wheel. A new pressing plant. I’m intrigued, but not enough to consider buying a turntable. Someone will rip the new material to digital, and life will go on (for the rest of us).

If he gets a crown of his own

He came; he saw; he left. Our emperor (actually, our prime minister) was on the Island, today. He didn’t stop by (I have some great coffee just waiting for a visit), and I learned that he didn’t visit our local museums either. What was he thinking about? Coffee AND railway artifacts, there for him to enjoy. Do his “people” even consider the hidden value in a particular place?

The promise of an extended stay

On the news, I learned that I (as a human) should not be compared to a tub of yogurt; that is, I don’t have a “best before date”. In fact, based on the newest research, humans could, theoretically, live for a very long time. Well into a second century, for instance.

Still double-numbered

Time to focus on the job at hand: trying to remember if I did anything today. Oh, right, I didn’t. Never left the property. Almost as if I had one of those invisible fences. Even the roll of flyers, dropped in the driveway, landed safely inside the perimeter.

The movie will have to wait

Nothing to see here. Move along. The movie of my day-to-day life will have to wait; still insufficient action. Yes, this is a beach day. I watched others prepare for the moment, and then the dog and I remained behind to mount the castle guard. And there were ships, tall ships, just beyond the fetch of the telescope. I knew they were “out there” but saw nothing in the haze. Perhaps conditions will improve. Perhaps the evening news will provide better coverage.

Trying to retie the tie

In genealogy, the rule of thumb is to follow a trail until you know it isn’t the right trail. Kind of like real life, in a way. This evening, I happened to notice a duplicate family in my dataset. It happens. In this case, the principle “character” is actually a character… a well-known fiddler out of Cape Breton.

Self-imposed emergencies

Sometime, early this morning, the door to the deck blew open. Just a little. The wind and the rain came in. Just a little. That towel that we place near the door, to wipe the dog’s feet came in really handy. He rarely gets into the mud, but the intemperate weather, on the other hand.

Knowledge, first and foremost

Based on the years I spent fixing other people’s (technical) problems, I realize one fundamental thing. To someone who doesn’t understand the problem (or the underlying technology), anyone who can fix the situation is “a magician”. We depend on that principle to get through the day, in tech support. And by corollary, I know that there are a myriad of areas where I lack even basic knowledge.

Go ahead and fix it

I have another “how come?” question. How come, when that guy calls from Microsoft, to let me know that there is a problem with my computer, and I thank him and say “Go ahead, fix it”, he never does. He just hangs up. Is there something that I’m missing here?

Record the colours

At the edge of a nearby field, the dog and I noticed some small flags. OK, maybe not the dog, but I had to know the why. This was human intervention. On the ground, a small green plastic disk, with an inscription. “Vernon Pitfall”. Don’t know anyone with that name hereabouts, but at home Google came to the rescue.
