Minimal largesse

posted in environment |

Let’s hear it for the signs of spring. Birds reappearing, on schedule. Flowers, popping up of their own accord. OK, in the case of the tulips and croci, there was an initial planting by the resident gardener, but now the autopilot has kicked in. I can see the difference, from day to day. Colour, where there was little before. All good.

It fell to me to fill one of the seed dispensers, this afternoon. Believe me, those little feathered monsters can go through a whack of content in a very short period of time.  Who knew?

I happened to watch a section of the subcommittee hearing (from the US sideshow) this afternoon. One intelligent lawyer answering a lot of silly questions. Hard to tell where this will eventually lead, but the (former) attorney-general knows what to say.

How little is enough? In the case of the current flooding, the QC government has pledged $500K to aid victims of the debacle. Given that the number “140 communities” is being bandied about, that comes out to a cool $3571.42 PER COMMUNITY! Please, don’t spend all that largesse in one place! That hardly pays for a pair of gum rubber boots per municipal representative.  Perhaps the first order of business is to invest in a small, inexpensive calculator for the minister in charge of the dossier.

Meanwhile, that same minister assured everyone that the dams (designed to prevent flooding) are doing their job. I’d be very frightened, if I lived in the area, because that minister obviously doesn’t!
