All filed away

I should know better than that: reading a great food blog, on an empty stomach. The article, which deals with iconic foods in the area, has me wanting more than I can find in an empty fridge. Imagine spending the day in local restaurants, and then taking the nearest ferry and repeating the routine (tomorrow) as you make your way eastward to yet another ferry. Then, spending a few more days (on the Rock). Sounds like a plan for summer. Oh yes, the blog address: www.eatthistown.ca

Awake for setting

Blame it on a restless dog, or a round of thunder, or just anticipation. I knew there would be traffic on the road, this morning. With two cars going by, before sunrise, that counts as congestion. I jest… but this is “Setting Day” which counts as one of the more important dates on the local calendar. At six in the morning, the skippers sprint to their preferred grounds, and the hunt for the lobster begins. Between now and the end of June, a lot of frozen fish will be offered as an attraction, and a lot of scavenging “sea bugs” will go into the cage and take a quick trip to the surface.

Snapshot of my process

Part of my interest in genealogical research is the chance to glean detail from local history. Tie a name to a place, etc. This morning, with nothing more pressing on my agenda, I decided to see just how easy the discovery process can be.

A community says farewell

In one of those “you won’t know it’s over until it’s over”, our local TV news lost their core, this week. In a double whammy, brought on by retirement, for one and career redirection, for the other, the two people that anchored the suppertime program will be gone, as of tomorrow. This evening, a huge public reception was held (and shown in simulcast via Facebook Live). I joined the close to two thousand “off site” participants.

Hang in there

Perhaps “the news” isn’t as important as I had thought. For years, I’ve given great credence to what comes across my desk as coverage of the world at large. I read newspapers, listen to the radio, watch the evening telecast of local content (although the Bruce and Boomer show winds up tomorrow evening, replaced with as yet unrevealed changes). Over all, I take pride in being able to (at least) recognize names, faces and places.

Unfamiliar names

With new bison babies in Banff and Steve in the sky, Alberta had the two closing stories on this evening’s newscast. I’m impressed. Much kinder than raging superfires and spilled petro-goo. Meanwhile, locally… hold on, I’m checking. Oh, right. We have rented a larger hall to say goodbye to our newscast guys later this week. Perhaps, if they’d found their own version of nicer, we wouldn’t be saying goodbye.

We still have potatoes

After watching too many episodes of Two and a Half Men, I have a soft spot for Melanie Lynskey, aka Rose. She doesn’t do normal. Caught her latest movie, in the streams:  I Don’t Feel At Home In The World Anymore. Glad I did. Ninety minutes in an alternate reality; my own life seems very comfortable, and comforting in retrospect.

A plus to procrastination

When it comes to getting certain things done, I’m not always proactive. In particular, service on the car. I don’t let that “service due soon” flag interrupt my calm nature. Oil changes are for the next visit to see my local garage guy. Getting the tires changed; sometimes, it pays to be late. This morning, we had a fresh new cover of snow, all around. If I’d changed over to summer rubber, that could have been problematic.

Just a blur, to me

The glow from my laptop covered the change from late afternoon to “Wow! It’s really dark outside!” Just a question of a few hours and a rich vein of genealogical data, and I’m in charge of my own world. The dog checks by, once in a while; there could be a loose biscuit around. With the other half of the household off to convene with kindred spirits, I make my own fun, as they say.

A trivial night

We did it! Tip-to-tip today. A round trip time in excess of nine hours, although we did stop to visit some stuff. Oh, and order the deck furniture. A good day, actually. We saw blankets being made, and yarn being spun. We caught a glimpse of the lighthouse on the sandbar. Even the dog seemed satisfied.
