Cool, dimly lit; everything it should be

Couldn’t figure out why the code wouldn’t flow… for some reason, my efforts to connect a trio of Morse keys was getting me nowhere. Tested the connections, and all seemed sound, except that there was no sound. Downloaded and read the relevant pages in the manual. Tweaked menu settings. Changed cables. And then, after lifting one key and setting it down again, everything clicked. Just one of those mysteries.

Newer fields and forests

We like to think that we have a thoroughly modern household. Tasks are shared, albeit not always equally. Think of it as an evolution, or a learning process. There are so many individual responsibilities in keeping a house “up” as they used to say, particularly in the absence of servants (a Downton flashback, triggered by theme music from another TV series, sharing the same composer).

A false sense of secrecy

This is just a hunch, but I believe that the tax people haven’t embraced the online access model. Sure, there’s lip service, in a website. There’s also a help desk, staffed by people who may not know much geography, but they’re willing to ask questions.

But did you see me wave?

The expectation is simple; when you are left alone in the house, for more than an afternoon, there are chores. Nothing too difficult, although the dog has proved to be hopeless as an assistant. Pick up his “lost” hair, although we both know exactly where to find it – everywhere. Make the bed. Don’t leave anything where it wasn’t when you were put in charge.

Search mode now off

The missing power cable for my transceiver has really bothered me. I know, yesterday I went so far as to order another one, but the transaction was held up awaiting a quote for postage fees. And in the meantime, my subconscious remained in process mode.

Despite the label

On the counter, a small bunch of bananas… no blackening of the peels, so I don’t have to perform the conversion into banana bread just yet. In fact, maybe I’ll get my daily source of potassium and other stuff, just by eating one. They were bound with a blue and white plastic garland, with the intriguing text “Organic Biologique”. And so, I’ve eaten one, peeled of course, and it tasted just like a “banana”. Which leads me to wonder how much extra I paid for the label.

A time to sow

Today, I heeded the siren call. After an afternoon of updates and restarts, two of my laptops have climbed Hill Ten on the Microsoft mountain range. Why today? A question of chance, really. While looking for something else, I found the “spare” hard drive that I purchased for just such an occasion. One that was in the state I received it, with my (then) newest laptop. The drive has been reinstalled in the machine, and moved from 7, to 8, to 8.1. Today, 10. The drive is now back in its box, waiting for the next time around.

Transplant test

Sometime, just after dawn, I girded up my emotions and waved goodbye. The car is now at destination, and I’m busy putting order in the debris. Simple stuff; loads of laundry, bags of the bits left behind on desktops and in drawers. A year in the life.

A door rehung

We rehung the last door. The one that was in a too large opening, with the bias in the wrong location. No big deal, for two people; I would have hated the job as a solo effort. Symbolic, really. My year of living with son #3 as the assistant for odd jobs comes to an end in the morning. Travel time, and the start of the next chapter. We put that in focus by watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

A new family game

The family has a new game. Almost a sport; you drop the cake cover over the squirrel, and then you transport it several kilometers away with enough seeds to start out on a new life. Four, so far this afternoon, and the sun isn’t set, yet. Oddly, we have one of those fancy commercial cages on order. I suspect it will be nowhere near as effective.
