Lest we forget

I’ve heard that “history is written by the victors”. But, what about the moments of remembrance?

This evening, on the eve of the centennial of a great battle, CBC presented an excellent documentary about one of the important battles from the Great War, detailing the efforts of Newfoundland soldiers at the battle of Beaumont-Hamel. A deeply moving recall of events that are now beyond the memory of anyone who actually participated in the living hell of that trench war.

Working with a list

Give me a list and I’ll get it done. That’s one of my mottos. This morning, up with the sun, I decided to go to town on the current one.

Caught in mid-moult

The wild waving outside the living room window caught my attention… turns out that we had a new species on the sidewalk. Had to wait for the right occasion to snap a picture.

The first blooms of summer

With a certain degree of pride, I’d like to announce the appearance of the first blossoms on my strawberry plants. This is all new to me, but from what I’ve heard, a flower begets a fruit begets a home-made strawberry shortcake. Eventually. I’ll continue my observation and research, to find out just how long it takes to go from one step to another. Given that these were stringy plants in the bottom of a paper sack just a few weeks ago, it may take long enough that I’ll really enjoy the harvest. If the birds, and squirrels, and slugs and who knows how many other of the neighbours don’t get there first. Will an electrical fence stop a hungry crow?

No one small adjustment

I haven’t realized just how difficult the life of a student can be, for a very long time. At a distance from the classroom, I’d forgotten just how many details there can be, for any subject. Couple that with immature filters; on a new subject, the points that are important get lost in the fog.

A tiny voice

Want to learn about having a “tiny voice”? Try ham radio on low power, with a vertical antenna. This is Field Day weekend, and the bands are active. I’m doing my part, in large, by listening a lot and periodically shouting out to the world. Problem seems to be that very few hear me, well.

A new weave pattern

The dog learned a new trick this afternoon. Or maybe it’s just a variation; I’ll salute his inventive process, just the same. His outside lead is rather long, and lately he’s been weaving the cord around the three bird feeder poles. Intricate loops, requiring time and energy to get free. Mostly MY time and energy. Anyhow, that’s what he does.

Rebuild

Two days now, but who’s counting? For two days, I’ve been wandering in a fog of low productivity. Or as the fans call it, OS X.

Junky keys

After spending an afternoon trying to find a “valid” keyboard among the odds and sods I keep around here, I am frustrated. Either the connector was the wrong type, or the batteries were kaput, or the blasted thing was simply intermittent. Doesn’t lead to much productivity.

Creating a feed

Back a decade ago, while camping, I spent some time in conversation with neighbouring tourists from the south. At one point, I was dubbed as a “socialist”. You know, I still wear that label, with pride. The federal government has announced that they intend to revamp the old age pension program. As a socially aware taxpayer, I approve that decision.
