Caught in mid-moult

posted in environment |

The wild waving outside the living room window caught my attention… turns out that we had a new species on the sidewalk. Had to wait for the right occasion to snap a picture.

g-s-moult

Nothing rare, here; a common garter snake. This is, however, the first time I’ve ever seen one actually in mid-moult. Not likely to see one again, given that this is the first time in a lifetime. I know the odds.

First harvest from the garden, as well. Some sort of bean. I’d include a picture, but I’m after eating it. For the record, it tasted like a bean, although butter might have improved the flavour, just a smidgen.  I’m going to have to get used to the idea that certain foods are not available in canned format, just because.

Heard a large Bang! (or was it a Crash!) this afternoon. Seems that the cover over the nightsoil tank didn’t survive its close encounter with a mower blade. I checked at the local hardware store, and online, before reaching out for advice. The guy that “did” the landscaping gave me a name, in the city. I’ll go there, tomorrow, because the idea of an open entrance to the nasty tank just doesn’t cut it. What surprised me is just how expensive certain objects can be, online. I guess that shipping a poly disc from the other side of “the pond” is counter-intuitive. The man at the place in town knew his stuff, right down to diameters and model numbers, so I trust this will turn out well.
