The first blooms of summer
With a certain degree of pride, I’d like to announce the appearance of the first blossoms on my strawberry plants. This is all new to me, but from what I’ve heard, a flower begets a fruit begets a home-made strawberry shortcake. Eventually. I’ll continue my observation and research, to find out just how long it takes to go from one step to another. Given that these were stringy plants in the bottom of a paper sack just a few weeks ago, it may take long enough that I’ll really enjoy the harvest. If the birds, and squirrels, and slugs and who knows how many other of the neighbours don’t get there first. Will an electrical fence stop a hungry crow?
My self-imposed ten days (!!) of house arrest ended this afternoon, when the car pulled into the driveway. Since that time, we’ve mailed a parcel (despite the impending postal disruption), gone for a seafood supper on the north side, bought a piece of seaglass jewelry, picked up a few groceries and emptied the mailbox. Whew! I’m tired just telling the story.
Great weather, though. T-shirt, shorts and bare toes, baby! This is summer much earlier than I’m used to (something about the workplace that discourages soles without soles (sic). Or souls… Between now and the cessation of the season, I shouldn’t have to wear shoes very often (unless I want to). Sandals? Maybe. I’m going to take things a day at a time, and see if I can’t get some tan on my ankles. Maybe even my midriff. Throw caution to the wind.
