No one small adjustment
I haven’t realized just how difficult the life of a student can be, for a very long time. At a distance from the classroom, I’d forgotten just how many details there can be, for any subject. Couple that with immature filters; on a new subject, the points that are important get lost in the fog.
This last while, I’ve been trying to absorb just what it IS that a guitar technician does. From more than a theoretical standpoint, now that I have some instruments to hold with care. There’s so much more than the name on the headstock. Seriously. I’m still naive enough to think that any given guitar might “sound” better, if only I understood the mysterious incantations of the “setup”.
With that in mind, I’ve been trying to absorb the wisdom of a number of teachers (all on YouTube). Whereas, a lifetime ago, you found A teacher, and your approach to any subject came from the mentoring process, now you can shop, if you would. I’ve learned the basic vocabulary, and I’ve taken measurements on my own instruments. Almost ready to move on to the next step, wherein I replace simple parts (specifically the nut and the saddle) and then try to make an inexpensive git into so much more; maybe.
So many parameters. I’m finally getting the feel for multi-variable mathematics, at a time when it no longer has any real value. If I adjust “this”, then “that” will change as well. Up to me to find the correct balance, and in time, actually improve things.
