Awaiting the Idol

Another end of season Grand Slam. Not hockey. Not politics. American Idol season XIII will be over in about 100 minutes. And to be fair, the wrap is always spectacular. Almost Sullivan “Really Big Show” spectacular. The showcase for various didn’t win contestants is fun, but J-Lo just blew out their candles. A distracting moment, when I’m trying to write.

Royally “not amused”

Oh how I wish I could draw a picture with words. I would offer up the expression of a certain royal couple, sitting in Ch’town, watching a comedic (sic) tribute to their mother. The script wasn’t funny, and they were “not amused”. In the most royal sense. Might be the longest visit ever by people with expensive pedigrees in that part of the world. And now they’re on their way to Winnipeg. There, it will be fun(ner).

MIDI tests

I’m a gearhead. Nothing to do with wheels and sprockets, and everything to do with patching one electronic device into another. This afternoon, with only the dog to protest, my first massive MIDI test is completed.

Some of life’s mysteries

Another afternoon with things that leave me with questions. What happened at the local sushi restaurant, where the kitchen caught on fire yesterday? Why do I have to instruct the ‘artist’ at Subway to add spinach to the spinach sandwich?  Does an open box of donuts mean that all other foodstuffs are off limits in the family kitchen… overnight? Today, life has mysteries. Tomorrow; probably more of the same.

Better sound than my earphones for outdoors

Recently, on an episode of Glee, I watched Santana dancing through a basement with something that looked like an oversize Lego brick. The “what could it be?” urge sent me searching, and with the help of YouTube and Google Goggles, I learned that it might be a Jawbone. Pardon the code; a particular model of Bluetooth speaker that seems to have quite a following among the technologically equipped.

OPA (other people’s ancestors)

There. Enough turning over the virtual rocks, looking for traces of OPA (other people’s ancestors). Unless a person has the need to know who their forebears were (rare, unless there is a title or monies involved), looking at research done by someone else is like… oh, I don’t know… checking out a bowl of cornflakes served up by someone else. Probably tasty, if you are hungry. Otherwise.

Review the support and reconsider

Fixed yesterday’s problem. Reformat, and profit. On to the next emergency.

I spent some time this morning, reviewing my contacts with a particular firm over the past year. In return for $10K, we received little. Precious little. Expensive little. In light of that, the support contract is now under evaluation, with a move to a pay-as-you-go model. Not likely to involve me, long term, but I prefer when public monies are spent with due diligence.

Ransomware

Am I difficult? When my employer changes a holiday from one date to another, is it wrong for me to point out that bus service on the “come to work” day will be arduous? HR did advise me that I can negotiate flexible hours with my superior; pity that the bus ride will take four hours round trip. Just the price to pay for not driving a car into the city center.

Hitting a knee-high wall

I’ve heard that when you run a marathon, at some point you “hit the wall”. Figuratively.  I don’t really know. But I love the analogy of the marathon, as I try to cross my own (career) finish line. Today, I banged into the wall. About knee level.

Relying on a real teller

My offer was to fix things on Monday. And so I did. The laptop was on the desktop by starting time, and returned to its keeper by coffee time. All that I had to do was keep refreshing the “updates” screen until the problems went away. If only everything was that easy.
