Time was, the start of summer was marked in red. Berry red. The colour of fresh strawberries, brought home from the nearest U-Pick. Best undertaken in early morning while the fields were still damp from dew, and the samples (you had to sample, it was part of the package) were wet and cool. By the time you had a couple of baskets beside you, the sun was getting too high for safety, and it was time to find a kitchen with a hot oven. Biscuits. Fresh cream.

A day like this makes me want to run along the shoreline. Of the ocean. I did get into the pool (long enough to agitate the sleeping greenies), but with a water temperature approaching that of my morning shower I didn’t stay long. This was a hot one. The dog found that neither side of the door suited his need for cooler breezes, and the infernal noise of all those fans inside must have played torture tunes on his sensitive ears.

Soon the sun will set. There is still a side of lawn to mow, and the pool ladder is high and dry. So, this is what being on holidays is like? Seems much the same as real life.

There we go. Based on comparative value, if yesterday was good, today was better. From the top of the first hour, to the bottom of the last, my day at work was pleasantly calm. Very little need from “the needy”, and no sudden emergencies. This is the end of the school year, and the halls are now empty. Ready for wax and whatever.

This was a good day.
Some of the tasks on my list were erased by the efforts of other. At least they won’t be there when I return… If I return… The calendar is finally on my side.

In an ordinary context, cleaning up is a mundane (but necessary) task. At home, or in the office. Clutter doesn’t please the eye, or so I’ve been told. But (and there’s always a but), it can also be an imposing trigger for a round of nostalgia.

Score another point for cheese. Over breaded pork chops, you get something even better. I should have taken a picture, but I was distracted by the flavour. Maybe next time.

I’m adding this one to the “learned too late to use” category of life skills. Last week, I contacted the US support team for our faulty display sign module. Within a couple of hours, an automated email with some suggestions on how to roll back time. And then, nothing else until this morning. Another automated message stating that since there had been no “activity” on this service request for three days, it was now classified as solved and closed.

What would you do if you found out that the old briefcase in the attic had belonged to Napoleon? And that he’d left some old scribblings in one of the sections? When I watch the Antique Roadshow, I’m left to ponder just such things. I mean, I don’t even have an attic, but what if? Enough to put me into a period of deep contemplation.

My sleep periods seem doomed to interruption. This last while, a cold wet nose is the prod that gets me up, and moving. Dog skills. Non-verbal communication. Etc. Last evening, when the “Come, follow me” appeal took place, there was an ulterior motive. The other dog needed to go outside, and our hound was just being a good host. I was touched by it (as well as by the nose).
