MIDI tests

posted in music, technology |

I’m a gearhead. Nothing to do with wheels and sprockets, and everything to do with patching one electronic device into another. This afternoon, with only the dog to protest, my first massive MIDI test is completed.

Let me set the scene. At the smart end of the cords, a new iPad mini. With apps, of course. Out through the camera adapter cable, to a powered USB hub. And into the hub, some controllers. The Oxygen49 keyboard, a Snowball USB microphone and the Alesis controller pad. Finally, the Bluetooth link to an external powered speaker. Lots of wires…

The short story, it all works. The longer version, less conclusive. Each element (as tested with Garageband) works. The drums need to be taught which pad is which, but that can wait. As a complete system; I’m not there yet. After all, something that simply works is less of a challenge in the world of a gearhead. Next up, reading the documentation.

I’ll soon be testing my new installation of EZDrummer 2. Just have to get people out of the house for another afternoon.

Important Canadian news. Or Canadien. After an unfortunate (and avoidable) injury, Cary Price will not be in goal for the rest of this series. Until the NHL controls the cheap shots, good players will suffer. I know, accidents happen. Except, the other player has been involved in a number of similar accidents along the way, and as one player put it, “The first thing we learn how to do is fall”. Meaning that you don’t use your blades to clear a path through an imaginary forest.
