Another reason to hoard copper

Over the years, I have learned to hang on to extra cables. Audio. Video. RF. All good. The alternative (smelting my own copper, drawing wires, etc. is just too much work). There’s a better reason, though; the cable you need may no longer be sold in an outlet near you.

Fooling the “watch” dog

A birthday ages me. My children’s birthdays age me even more. Simple, really. I don’t see myself getting older, but each year makes the sons that much closer to “full adulthood” with all the responsibilities and penalties attendant. And so, as I celebrate their special moment, I realize that none of us ever get to pull a Benjamin Button. Happy birthday!

Shiny toys for happy people

Even the simple things in life go better with education. I base this on my morning, where I spent about ninety minutes introducing someone else to the wonderful world of the tablet. Read iPad, given that we don’t seem to invite any competition. Not my point. The instruction manual with a new tablet is truly minimalist; a single playing card sized picture that shows where the buttons of importance are located. As if your tactile skills weren’t up to the task.

Retiled before retired

About fourteen months ago, in the cold of winter, my cubicle ceiling started to leak. Not exactly water from the outside world (where ice rules), but an effect of the old building meeting the new air. Anyhow, the tiles above my head were removed, and stacked… and forgotten. Until today, when a man with a ladder arrived. The glue wouldn’t hold, so he moved to plan B which required the use of his power scre driver (with a light). Yes, the techs in the office notice such things. My ceiling is repaired, before I retire.

Exposure to new artists

Never stop listening. In a world where many believe that a recording contract, (or a place in the classics listing) defines a musical career, there’s so much more.

Visual double-double

It’s over. The best poster I’ve spotted mentions that all-Canadian term ‘Double Double’. And now we can return to regularly scheduled broadcasts.

Precursors of a retail spring

Things were crowded, among the bins of nuts. Different sizes, different shapes. My needs were simple, if poorly defined. Each one with a special use, and a paired bolt and washer. This was hardware, not groceries. I needed just over a dozen stove bolts, but I wanted something that had more than a dome head.Waiting my turn, to examine the racks more closely.

I cannot see how it works

Some things are not meant to be understood. For example; magic. Not the stuff of myth and legend. The stuff of a pack of cards and an ability to trick the rest of us.

Unable to discern that sound

After six weeks of directed listening, I have to assume that I am no longer capable of hearing the chorus of “ten billion  butterfly sneezes” that so marked my youth. That was a Moody Blues reference, for the attentive among you. Seriously; after completion of an online course aimed at people involved in sound production, I have ro accept (with grace as charm, as always),  the reality of my getting on in years. The high frequencies no longer register. The low frequencies no longer register. I am out of phase, unable to chorus, doomed to flanging.

Island Gold!

Join  me in a cheer for Island Gold! Ms Moyse and her teammate “drove ‘er”, at speeds approaching 130km around and up and down a serpentine, and the goal became golden. If only for one moment, the Olympics belong to the rest of us who share a love for place.
