Exposure to new artists

posted in history, music |

Never stop listening. In a world where many believe that a recording contract, (or a place in the classics listing) defines a musical career, there’s so much more.

Thanks to those who aren’t caught in a rut, I’m exposed to new artists and new styles thanks to the happy marriage of Facebook and YouTube. Others share, I enjoy. This evening, a heavy metal quartet on cellos: Apocalyptica. Tomorrow, something else. All I have to do is sit back and learn. And anticipate. There is so much I want to try. Who knew that my first field of study would (potentially) be my last? Unless I recycle into something like accounting (not likely).

At work, a group of us are anticipating our next professions. Before leaving, the question is whether or not we’ll get all the vacation time and leftover benefits that are accorded by the “syndical agreements”. So far, it looks promising. After all, we could threaten to stick around…

Last night, someone else in the house pulled an all nighter. A classic, just like we used to do four decades ago. I’d forgotten that aspect of student life; it’s not one that beckons me to a reprise. I slept through, sort of, but the house was a tense zone.

And with that, it’s time to find some new reading material. My binge with Philip Kerr is coming to an end. Decent stuff, if you enjoy historical fiction with a central character. For my next selection, I’ll probably choose something complementary. After all, I now have a foundation of basic knowledge.
