Another reason to hoard copper

posted in technology |

Over the years, I have learned to hang on to extra cables. Audio. Video. RF. All good. The alternative (smelting my own copper, drawing wires, etc. is just too much work). There’s a better reason, though; the cable you need may no longer be sold in an outlet near you.

This evening, I advised in the purchase of a set of small near field monitors. That’s speakers, in the vernacular, and the purpose will be to add some needed quality to the sound effects of someone’s game computer. Little matter. The shop had what we wanted (!!) in stock (!!) at a competitive price. Sold! And on to the next step.

The speakers need to be attached to the computer for the magic to appear. And after visiting three different stores, we came up empty handed. What used to be common is now unavailable. Not obsolete; there’s a difference. We wanted a simple patch cord with two RCA connectors on one end, and a 3.5mm TRS on the other. Used to be…

At least, I had one in a box at home. After carefully untying the Gordian knot, I proudly presented my offering. Along with that lovely pine plank I purchased last weekend. As I say, everything has a purpose. I will replace the plank (in my intended use) with two more cutting boards, thanks to the dollar(s) store. Cheap at twice the price.

And so off we go into the pleasure of another weekend. Each one moves me down the road toward “done”. Although I deny it, I am counting.
