Island Gold!

posted in sports |

Join  me in a cheer for Island Gold! Ms Moyse and her teammate “drove ‘er”, at speeds approaching 130km around and up and down a serpentine, and the goal became golden. If only for one moment, the Olympics belong to the rest of us who share a love for place.

I remember the double-runner sleds with metal on the ground, belonging to a friend with a father that knew the real way to a kid’s heart. When we descended that icy slope beside the church, we might not have gone as fast as a bobsled, but it sure felt like it. Fifty years later and not forgotten.  We didn’t get medals, but we didn’t break any limbs. Worth just as much.

Trying to keep up with all the minor wars in the world. The two week pause for the Games might have halted hockey, but it did nothing to calm the savage spirits in Syria, and the Ukraine, and other such map marks. When the various talking heads on the news channels try to explain, they don’t ensue their stories with logic. Unfortunately.

The list went around this morning, to discover how many people plan on taking a March break. This is a school board, and the chances to escape the telephone scourge are infrequent. I thought about it, for a few seconds, and realized that I would have just as much peace by staying in. The office would be mine. And any holiday time can still be taken, when the weather has returned to more pleasing temperatures. Yes, it’s my last chance. It no longer matters.
