Almost too fast; son #1 and his faithful sidekick Maggie are back on the road. Good weather, well rested, what could go wrong? My hope is that this will encourage other visits, more often, perhaps even in “the heart of winter” so he can learn that blizzards are really a state of mind.

Wet day here. Along with the wind that made the waves look much larger than usual, we received rain. So far, a bit more than 43mm. Not enough to get me into ark-building mode, but the farmers are happier. Potatoes, without water, stay small. No joy (and no sales). This will buy another week or so of growth before the next existential crisis. It will also help our wells, ordinary and deep. And the fall storms are headed this way, as insurance.

Odd night, yesterday. The dog was unable to relax, and his anxiety went over the top. Near as I can figure, there must have been something outside that served as more than a simple distraction. It took both of his people to calm the spirit enough that those humans could finally get to sleep. We saw nothing untoward, but then again a coyote doesn’t always put on a concert.

Double delivery day here; two different vans in the
driveway, and the dog working overtime to earn his pay. I get it. The people
that go door to door to door have nerves of steel. No staying in the van and
waiting to see if a rescue will be required. They’re out, and have the parcel
AND the electronic gizmo AND the token dog biscuit in hand. Count that up. It
might be that these are mutants, who are specially recruited by UPS and others.

On TV, a doorbell sounds. In the room, with me, the dog goes
on high alert, ready to meet the visitors. This is the animal that I depend
upon for protection while I sleep? I am so not going to win the zombie
apocalypse!

The icebreaker left, just after sunrise. This is the first
time a ship has been at anchor, in view, overnight, and I rather appreciated
the change in routine.

On TV, the most recent iteration of “A Wrinkle In Time”, as
seen through the eyes of a cinematographer; when I read the book, years ago, I
had no idea that the storyline would affect anyone in this way. Guess I lack
the critical eye.

And so, it blowed, and then it rained, and then it snowed. Through
it all, I realized that having a heated house beats the worst that the local
weather systems can throw at me. If we wait a few more weeks, even the snow (now
drifted across the lawn) will disappear. The squirrel with his “go to the
feeders” tunnel will be exposed to my ridicule, and the birds… there’ll always
be birds.

The forecast people called this one correctly. It was,
indeed, a snow day. Schools and other offices left the lights off and the door
locked; I know of one because when I called my eye guy to arrange for a post-op
checkup, the answering machine recorded my request. They’ll listen to things
tomorrow. No emergency to avert.

A slippy day, here on the Island. Freezing rain started just
before school bus time, so the school closures did not delay. On the other
hand, a few levels of government had to think things through before deciding
that dangerous is dangerous. Why the reluctance to keep your employees safe? Do
you have a more valuable resource to protect? Is the wage thing really so important
to your bottom line? I had to look on
with dismay at the photos from other provinces: salt trucks sliding backwards
down the hill and into a ditch, in both NB and NS. Up in QC, some major bridges
were also closed. Or as my son put it, this is another typical February tropical
rain storm.
