Perhaps I should buy a bag of spuds. We went out for supper, tonight. Seafood. And the best thing on the plate was a selection of boiled new potatoes, with enough butter to make it worthwhile. The rest of the food was good, but this was outstanding.

Dateline, Hamilton Ontario. The child was all set to play with the pool toy on the lawn, until it moved. No windy day trickery here; the alligator was real and it was there, albeit not in a traditional context. Animal control officials guess that it was escaped from someone’s home zoo (what else?).

Time to hit pause; I’ve been researching family stuff for someone and let the time get away with it. Having a very productive evening. Easy to let the day turn into night, and the clock to tick into another date.

Here on the Island, we take our evening news seriously. The on-air personalities are famous, and when the two main faces decided to retire several months back, there was a lot of trepidation. The new “chair” started work this evening; we can all go back to living on the edge of our couches, waiting for the latest stories. She did just fine.

We have a cuckoo clock. Brought back as a souvenir from an European sojourn. Imagine yourself with a cellphone. Now, modify that image… imagine yourself with a cellphone AND no service. Zero bars. Anywhere within easy driving distance. Many in eastern Canada had that dystopian reality, today, after a fibre link was cut in the Montreal area. Turned off service from central Ontario through to the limits of life on the Rock.

Over the years, friends have commented on my creative use of hand tools. I guess that most people don’t immediately consider the hand saw, when in need of a screwdriver. It comes from having few options at hand, in a home where repairing things wasn’t a high priority.

Is this an effect of age, or cable TV? I’m rolling down the local road, minding my own business (and the speed limit). In the rear-view mirror I realize there’s a rather large truck, close at hand. The movie Duel comes to mind…
