Without the proper tools
Over the years, friends have commented on my creative use of hand tools. I guess that most people don’t immediately consider the hand saw, when in need of a screwdriver. It comes from having few options at hand, in a home where repairing things wasn’t a high priority.
I toughed my way through, and when finances permitted, I did purchase some things. Not always what I needed, but that’s another story. I ended up with enough assorted hammers and screwdrivers and other confounding objects to allow me leeway to break things without serious personal injury. That’s a goal.
Anyhow, tonight I happened across a video where the star of the show made a side trip to the local dollar store. Tool paradise, for the frugal. He wanted to prove that you could perform the “setup” of a guitar without going into professional levels of debt. I enjoyed the video. It proved my premise: you can make do when you have to.
He was taking care of simple procedures. Adjusting string height and fret levels. Changing strings. Where one proper tool would have required significant financial investment, he purchased “all that I need” for pennies on the pound. Nothing damaged. No fingers removed. In all, a success. Reminds me that when you don’t have the proper screwdriver, that handsaw can still save the day.
The car went in to see the dealer team this morning. They didn’t fix the problem (a flashing light that triggers stress attacks). I now have to consider my options, without a proper education of “cause and effect”.
