Going for coffee

For those among you, who live urban lifestyles, going for coffee is just part of the process. You go, you order, you drink, you leave. I’m from another world, and the coffee from my home machine tastes just great. No need to ever settle for a beverage that is too hot and served in a paper cup. But, I’m willing to bend my ways to the demands of others. Which saw me surfing through the snowdrifts, this morning, hoping not to discover the world of a ditch.

A decided lack of standards

Spent today upgrading one of the PC machines. Now, I’ve done a lot of this sort of thing, through the years. Had to seek answers to a few questions. But, did someone change the industry standards without announcing their intentions?

TV and prophecy, of sorts

Beware the wordsmith! A certain president-elect was called out, last evening, during a major Hollywood award show. The recipient of a very prestigious award used the time allotted for the standard speech to mention that P/E and his shortcomings. Without ever uttering his name, no less. I’ll let you seek out the actual delivery (via YouTube, for example). Just a reminder that some have the ability to address the public without resorting to the word “huge” repeatedly.

Like a Shakespearian play

The weather system that came through overnight reminds me of a Shakespearian play. No, not The Tempest. Rather, Much Ado About Nothing. I’ve got some replacement snow banks, and the dog’s best efforts on the lawn are out of sight for another few weeks, but that’s about it. Even my stock of storm chips didn’t diminish. We did have a lot of hungry birds (better than Angry Birds, I guess).

Is it storm chip time, yet?

Too quiet. Pretty much the whole Island is waiting on a big snow storm, due to begin between now and bedtime. From social media, the reports are that snow chips are on counters through the land. Those that fear a dry spell have filled the tub with water. Shovels are close at hand. And now we wait.

Name the date and the place

Already the weekend? How did that come about? When “every day is Saturday”, as we were warned in that pre-retirement seminar, such distinctions are lost in the noise. I mean, if I want to watch a movie and eat a bowl of ice cream, I don’t need to consider if the activity will infringe on my employer’s rights. All positive, from where I sit.

Getting all the parts necessary

Sometime through the night, a sale price was mentioned, in my DAW group. A hint that installing SSD media would turn any pumpkin into a twin-rocket stagecoach. I’m impulsive, and I realized that the new computer here didn’t have any mojo, yet. Time to shop.

Wind damage

Without a tone of panic in my voice, I take high winds seriously. All that rattling and rocking is just cause for alarm. A few shingles, gone astray, can lead to larger problems. Today, the winds were as strong as two days ago, but nothing came loose. Just across the way (OK, 80 km over open water, but visible on a clear day), the winds reached peaks of  more than 160 km, about double what we received. And this happened…

Averted the need for a personal rainbarrel

On the calendar, I’ve pencilled in my note for today: “Emergency averted”. With the assistance of someone who walks on the rooftop (no, not Santa), new shingles are in place. When the winds return, later this evening, I’ll sleep more soundly.

Recalling Blackpool

As long as my ISP doesn’t apply a data cap, I’ll be fine. We have slow access here; it never gets above 3.1 MBps. We make do. Once in a while, I have to squeeze the tube a bit.
