On high alert
The last day on the calendar. I should wax retrospective, but that’s not how I roll. Rather, I’m on a sonic hunt.

Who has seen the wind? Neither you nor I, but I did my best. Stayed up for most of the night, as the house shook and the trees made the kind of keening sound rarely heard by here.

The day is winding down. Sunset without benefit of the sunshine, etc. Time to note some of the things I learned, today and that actually apply to any given day.

Skating, as a spectator sport. Maybe you enjoy compulsory figures, or a mad hockey dash. Me? I prefer watching provincial premiers explain how their “carbon tax” plan won’t affect the citizen. Skating, on thin ice. Only a matter of time before one of the lads in the expensive suits gets a good soaking. I hope.

Should you be feeling invulnerable, get over it. Put away the mythology volumes and the Superman comix. In need of further grounding? Check the obituary stream in your local newspaper. Or, on a more global level, just pay attention to social media.

There you go. Send in the winds and snow. After all, there is nowhere to go, even if the urge came upon me.

This day is starting to get a little long. I blame the dog, in part; he seemed to need me as the designated “open the door and let me out” assistant, twice during the night. Messes with the REM sleep, big time. In fact, when it came time to go off for a real breakfast, I took a break, to fast.

Went shopping this afternoon, hoping to score a small chicken for an intimate dinner. Really, I don’t need a $60 turkey to get me through the holiday season (and beyond). No luck. I’ve adapted my menu, and we’ll now have chicken that comes without a skeleton. Safer for the dog, but my carving skills will take a back seat.

Pardon my complacency! The good run has lasted for years, decades even. Not Camelot, but without major bumps on my road. That may change in the new year.
