Feeling invulnerable?
Should you be feeling invulnerable, get over it. Put away the mythology volumes and the Superman comix. In need of further grounding? Check the obituary stream in your local newspaper. Or, on a more global level, just pay attention to social media.
It seems that this year has been hard on celebrity rolls. No joke; more and more of the icons (of my age) are falling off the edge. That could be a factor (of my age), though. Seriously, being on a Hollywood A-list is not a ticket to living forever. Yes, it’s saddening, but no, this is not “a year unlike any other”. Again, due (to my age), I’ve seen a few other seasons. The rich and famous are not under attack, any more than the poor and anonymous. It’s just the way things work.
Perhaps we should recognize that we’ve been fortunate to have individuals with long and productive careers. I love it when the press underlines the half-century career of Keith Richards. It takes talent (along with exceptional genes) to remain on stage for as long as he has.
And what about that Queen (whether or not you subscribe to monarchistic views). Seriously. I’ve never had a moment in my life where her effigy wasn’t on my loose change. I might recognize her, if she ever stopped by. Yes, she can come in, as long as she leaves the rest of the riff-raff waiting on their tour bus. Just a thought.
As we slide (slippery out) toward the eve of a New Year, just ignore the news flashes.
