A decided lack of standards

posted in computing |

Spent today upgrading one of the PC machines. Now, I’ve done a lot of this sort of thing, through the years. Had to seek answers to a few questions. But, did someone change the industry standards without announcing their intentions?

The drive bays make no sense (and this on a desktop Dell). Nothing fits, from my point of view, except for the pieces that came from the factory. And power connectors? When did a computer power supply not have ANY expansion connectors? I had to buy an after-market cable just to get “juice”. The jump to Win 10 goes with my getting older, but something as simple as adjusting the placement of home directories took me the better part of the afternoon. Unable to get the job done in the “old way”, I resorted to moving things branch by branch. The job is almost done, thankfully.

There’s a thaw on the way, so I realized that my big drift of snow on the deck could not be ignored. Right now, powder. By this time tomorrow, dead weight. And so me and my shovel got out there and moved things around. The winds, blowing the powder back in my face, meant that I had to do a big clothes dry when I finally came back inside. Only two more months!

Trying to assist son #3 with a YouTube difficulty. He ends up with buffering, which stops the show for several seconds at a time. Let’s go from full-motion to stop-motion, and hope the user doesn’t mind. I’ve given him some possible solutions, and I’m waiting on feedback.
