The dark soundtrack

The question was clear. Who, or what, shrieks in the middle of the night? I’m not sure, after some research, but I have my suspicions.

Seasonal humour

It’s official: the holidays can now begin. I’ve got my jar of mustard pickles. A special shout out to my local general store.

The power of local retail

Getting into this “local retail” thing. The prices are fair, the service is exceptional, and it’s an insurance policy; when you need something, it shouldn’t always require three hours in the car. This is a small place. Yes, I have a new battery, and all is good.

A bad review with ramifications

Now this is fun! On one side, the man who would be king of the world (no, not the guy on the Titanic). On the other side, the owner of a magazine with circulation numbers over the million mark. On one hand, a restaurateur (at least by ownership). On the other hand, someone with the ability to write coherently. Let the games begin.

No cranking achieved

I’ve cleared the deck of snow cover, again. That forecast announcing rain later this evening was inspiring; fluffy snow is a nuisance, wet snow is a heavy load. Now I’ll sleep without the fear of an impending collapse.

The tyranny of winter

For three decades, I was subject to the tyranny of winter. Or more accurately, the work rules. During my productive period, pay for work required that I be present (as in most places) and if a patch of stormy weather interfered, that was just too bad.

Saved by the thaw

Another item stricken from the todo list. That laptop is now in the hands of Canada Post; I paid just over $40 for delivery by early next week, with tracking and signature. For a change, I couldn’t have done this job more cheaply by myself. Having the original shipping carton was reassuring, because if it didn’t destruct on the way here from China, it should make the trek (truck?) to Upper Canada just fine.

A gentle cleanup

Don’t be fooled. Virtual work is every bit as rewarding as physical, and just as tiring. This evening, I’ve been tasked with cleanup duties, and after several hours, my job is (pretty much) done.

Rescue the Deere

Snowflakes are heavy. Oh sure, in small quantities, no big deal. But, let them gather and before you know it, things fall apart. Rooftops, for example. Or decks. I didn’t want the latter on my conscience, so after a hearty dose of good coffee, I headed out with my preferred shovel.
