A gentle cleanup

posted in computing |

Don’t be fooled. Virtual work is every bit as rewarding as physical, and just as tiring. This evening, I’ve been tasked with cleanup duties, and after several hours, my job is (pretty much) done.

You see, one of the laptops is moving on. Replaced by a newer, faster desktop machine. My work on the new machine was complete, so it was time to ready the old machine for a new owner. Yes, we recycle here, with kindness. Amazing how much data and code accumulates in the corners of a computer.

I had to make a decision, on whether I returned the machine to “factory state”, or if I simply cleaned house. Considering that I’d already gone through the whole upgrade from 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 dance, I didn’t want to face the slow ‘net feed we now live with. Plus, I think the free upgrade path has disappeared over the course of the last year. Decision made: I would tidy things up, without rebuilding the whole show.

That said, it takes a lot of “yes, please continue” dialogue to get past the UAC wardens of Windows. No simple technique applies. I filled a plate with grapes and Gouda (to the dog’s dismay) and made an affair out of things. The original shipping carton is here, beside me, and as soon as I check and recheck the address, my gifting will be on its way.

Other than that, I spent much of the day moving stuff around here, as well. The BBQ is in the garage, and our snow paths from yesterday are already filled back in.
