My biggest food prep, ever

As part of my role in the family, I help with meals. Not all the time, but enough that I feel comfortable in my kitchen. I rarely serve more than a half-dozen people at a go, and the prep time can be measured in portions of an afternoon. Today, I tried something different.

Take no hostages

No sense taking chances. After reading two different news articles this morning about personal datasets taken hostage, I decided to run a “scan” on my hard drive. It’s been going for more than seven hours, and the end is nowhere in sight. Small wonder that people tend to trust any program that says “you’re safe”. For the record, the two articles involved very different players: a small office and a whole school board. In both cases, a disastrous result to opening a simple email attachment.

Better after replacement

Back in my undergrad days, I happened to sample a psychology course that presented the basic tenets of Gestalt. I continue to accept them. Especially when it comes to my personal coffee preparation. Around here, the machine AND the ground coffee AND the water all come together to produce something better.

Double-feature cinema

Two evenings and my double-feature cinema is over. I decided to dig into the archives, and bring up some Hitchcock from before I was born. A chance to see the world in monochrome.

Stop for the flashing lights, kid

Obviously, certain messages aren’t getting through. About telephones, for example. There’s only one safe way to text while behind the steering wheel, and it involves being parked. The only way. Now, take a look around you, when in town, and see if you can spot the “dodo”. No sense sending them a message, because they aren’t paying attention.

A stalled storm

I’ve recorked my glue bottle. The mechanical assembly is complete, and as soon as I figure out the how, I’ll move on to the sanding stage. This is all new to me, and I’ve already made substantial mods to the original kit. Yes, it “voids the warranty”, as if a box of wood pieces actually is protected from the excesses of a glue bottle or an out-of-control sanding pad.

No selfie sticks allowed

There is so much I don’t understand, when it comes to playing games on the computer. I was just told (see if I can keep this straight) that if you buy your upgrade in a box, the character starts at 100, but if you download the upgrade, your character is much weaker, and you have to play for a while to get the value up to 100. Am I missing something here? About playing?

Bring a wrench

The distance from “Come look at this” to squatting on the floor, disassembling a table was shorter than I would have guessed. Required going home to unload the groceries and find an adjustable wrench, actually. Still not sure of all the details, but I’m involved in a transfer of furniture from one place to another; I’ll be better able to figure things out when that table is back on its four legs.

Clamp work

Another quiet afternoon. A neighbour was changing address, so the car and usual driver were conscripted to assist. Leaving me, fueled by cold pizza, to learn about the craft of gluing wood. I had received a basic education, back in the 60’s, but that hardly counts.

A party of one

I really should believe the labels at our local pizza place. That “party” box isn’t meant for a “party of one”, no matter how much support the dog offers. Right now, there are bundles of all-dress in both the fridge and the freezer. Thankfully, a long weekend lies ahead.
