Take no hostages

posted in computing, environment |

No sense taking chances. After reading two different news articles this morning about personal datasets taken hostage, I decided to run a “scan” on my hard drive. It’s been going for more than seven hours, and the end is nowhere in sight. Small wonder that people tend to trust any program that says “you’re safe”. For the record, the two articles involved very different players: a small office and a whole school board. In both cases, a disastrous result to opening a simple email attachment.

I came close, the other morning. An email, supposedly coming from my own domain. It contained a “payload” of a script file… No, I did not “run” the script, but the original sender lives a half world away from me. Doubt that it came with my best interests at heart.

A quiet day. After watching the ferry sail past, we decided to take a day trip over to the lighthouse. My first time, this season, as a tourist, even with the proximity. In the gift shop, I found a book I plan to read, and we acquired a birdhouse. Guess it has been on the list here for a while. Now to find a way to hang it, in plain view, while keeping the featherheads safe from predation. Maybe I can hold off until spring…

I love my bicycle helmet. It has served me well for the last forty years, which goes beyond the corporate recommendation to replace every three seasons. I’m not taking chances, and so I have ordered something new and shiny. The original can go into my personal museum, as an anchor exhibit.
