Today’s new snow cover brought us a new show from the front window. One of those squirrels that has made camp in the treeline loves the free food, and when things were (unfortunately) covered, he took things in hand. A new series of tunnels, with pop-ups to check out horizon risks; he moved from hole to hole with amazing speed, and each hole marked a seedmine. Until the eventual melt, he’s got control of the larder.

Social does a wonderful job with warnings. Critical warnings. Do this NOW or ELSE! Today, one of our ebook readers was in focus. We have several around here, covering the various proprietary fiefdoms, and Kindle needed an update. Actually, the one here didn’t; we’re exceptional in that we keep devices up to the latest firmware whenever possible.

I’ve decided to cease answering questions about “what is new” after my trips in the car. From now on, refer any questions to my canine assistant: he loves to watch out the windows.

The pre-snowstorm storm, this morning, was unexpected. As was the klaxon of a large truck, reversing into our laneway. I don’t pretend to understand the forecasting behind “automated fuel delivery”; nor does the propane seller. We took a charge of 40 litres, due in large part to infrequent use of the standby generator.

Today, an early alarm, coupled with an early departure. Before coffee, even, out of solidarity. We were headed to the city for a medical appointment.

More proof that times have changed: the article in Macleans, listing the relative ranking of “party schools” in the universityverse (it’s a word, believe me). My alma mater has fallen so far off the radar that I had to read to the end of the list to find it.

Standing alone in the middle of the field, holding a long stick and a measuring tape, I realized the important detail: it’s not very warm, yet. The bright sunshine did nothing to mask a chill from the breeze. As our household anticipates the last snow of the season, garden layout is now important. Mustn’t miss even one of those “growing days” that the seed catalogue provides as a parameter. And before those seeds start to grow, there are a few more details that need resolution.

As we listen to a short documentary, produced by one of the “kids” that used to hang around our house with my sons, I’m encouraged. His work was exemplary, and proof that even those “kids” can accomplish great things; progress didn’t grind to a halt once we (the people of my generation) stepped out of harness. Bravo!

If you were looking for me, this afternoon, I wasn’t home. Of course I am back now, and I didn’t find your note, so I guess we’re good. This was a day in the city for the family, although the dog (on car duty) may have found it less amusing than the rest of us. There has been a trade show scheduled on my calendar for several weeks now; today was the day to go and see where we could spend more money.
