My world seems to be going to the birds. The robin from this morning spells spring, as did the flying vee of Canada geese, heading to wherever they go to celebrate the end of snowfall. The four ruffed grouse in front of our door were just a novelty.

Happily I have a very flexible schedule, because a certain contractor is stretching the envelope. An email, before sunrise, to let me know “his men” were going to stop by today. Now, after sunset; no sign of them. Either they got lost on the long eastward road, or …

I’ve just learned that my salad servings lack “greenery”. My take on the subject is that once you’ve added several kinds of cheese, a real meat (think ham, or chicken) and some tomato, there’s not much room left. Also, Popeye taught me that spinach was super; isn’t that sufficiently chlorophyllian?

For anyone operating a neighbourhood restaurant (or feeding station), the customers are a large part of the charm. Regular faces, at their regular tables (or perches). Few complaints, as long as the menu stays constant. Of course, once in a while there’s a new face.

The answer was much simpler than usual: Look in the other bag. You see, my supper involved a large ham, and what better for the side than some mashed spuds (peeled and cooked, of course).

I’ve lost the touch. Whereas the Easter bunny role suited me well (not the suit, the role) two decades ago, I fell out of training. Today, I was forced into compromise.

Here’s an odd parallel for you. Locally, we’ve been warned that “mud season” is nigh. Sounds scary; I find myself checking online prices for a pair of gum rubbers. The high kind, just in case. And we’ve arranged welcoming mats near the doors, in an attempt to stem the tide. Still too early to announce success (it hasn’t really stopped snowing yet), but I’ve lived here in a past life and as long as I avoid back road shortcuts until mid-July, I should be safe.

Seemed like a great idea, to me. Skip that whole cooking process and find a nearby restaurant. Supper, at someone else’s expense (not exactly). Not to be; we’re on the cusp of a long weekend, and the nearby restaurant started their time away from the kitchen early this afternoon. I had no choice but to pick up my big knife and chop chicken and bell peppers. Fajita night, in spite.

Over the last year, I’ve had a project underway. Shift son #3 from a tea slurper to a coffee guzzler. Tried different strategies, including moving to a place that has limited access to tea (other than the ubiquitous Orange Pekoe). Allowed him the liberty to alter a good cuppa with additives: chocolate, for example. Now for the final step.

I’m surprised. A package of bacon that I took out of the freezer isn’t going to feed nearly as many people as I had calculated. If present tendencies continue, the count is going to top out at one. Mind, that person isn’t complaining.
