The date may change, but the stress level remains the same. This is tax season; even though every cent (or nickel, now that the penny has been officially made “non-status”) passes through the hands of the government before I touch it, the level of inane backflips varies not one iota. I use software, and I do my best to learn from past experience.

We’re on the eve of the “big gamble”: where fisherfolk load up their boats with traps, and at the crack of dawn head out to sea… to throw the whole shebang overboard. Oh, they can probably find the where, again, thanks to good sea sense and a functional GPS, but I always wonder. In fact, one of the local breweries holds this event in such high regard that they’ve marketed an ale named for the event.

Pardon me… I was distracted and failed to see the day disappearing from the mental calendar. How else to explain that I’m in the “fifteen minutes to midnight” slot, trying to post.

Another day filled with unusual purchases. Even though I’m not new to the homeowner scourge of having to get something else every turn around, this time I’m into unknown territory. Case in point: I now have a 25 kg sack of ditch mix (“containing red fescue”) and a roll of chicken wire.

The dog agrees; a walk in the woods is just a better way to start the day. The snow is almost all gone, except for the odd collection under a low-lying limb. The tall grasses aren’t up, so making our way was easy and direct. I now have a better idea of what lies directly north of here.

The dog was keen to come along this morning. I wanted to test the premise that the seasons are changing; what better way than to get outside and walk around the yard? That’s what we did, taking the time to admire the mud (in places) and pretend to ignore the hares. And with the tour completed, we (no, not the dog) reconsidered the eventual placement of the garden experiment.

This afternoon, I completed my very first streaming video broadcast. Used Periscope, and although my bandwidth was quite ordinary, there were a few people tuned in. Even cooler, I was able to watch the content, later; what I missed in real time, etc.

Turned down an invitation to go on a field trip this evening, in the woods. Not sure why, but there’s a niggling memory of a book that I haven’t read, in the CanLit section of the local library, called “I Heard The Owl Call My Name”. I’m unwilling to take the chance of a) hearing my name called, and b) running off in terror, and c) colliding with a large tree in the dark. Life is too short to take unnecessary risks.

For years, one of my favourite movie quotes has been “If you build it, he will come”. Why? Because there’s a truth behind it, and we have a similar case close to home. Back, four decades ago, a family in the area offered their field as a place to come and play; in particular, traditional music.

An early morning hardware store run, and with it the ability to get another job off my todo list. I needed driver bits; with the right one in the chuck, my garden frames were assembled before lunchtime. Now on to the difficult part.
