From now on, set aside the mask

posted in media |

The pre-snowstorm storm, this morning, was unexpected. As was the klaxon of a large truck, reversing into our laneway. I don’t pretend to understand the forecasting behind “automated fuel delivery”; nor does the propane seller. We took a charge of 40 litres, due in large part to infrequent use of the standby generator.

I read most of my news. Online, to be sure. Unlike a print medium, comments are copious. For the sites that “allow” anonymous posts, the  tone is sometimes impolite…

CBC announced, today, that the future of their comment section will require “real identities”; one way to temper the tone, I suppose. Immediately, those who still believe that the persona need not be public were quick to retort their displeasure: “censorship”… “a blow to free speech”… and on and on.

I disagree. Comments are not meant to be masked. I look forward to the new colour of things.

And life goes on. I have a selection of musical instruments here. One, in particular, bears no maker marks. This afternoon, I contacted one of my preferred YouTube channel animators, and sent what I knew of the  history behind the beast, along with some photos. Digital, of course.

I received a reply within minutes (wow!), Not an answer to my query; the mystery deepens. However, this counts as a new asset for me. Ask the people with the knowledge, unlike a generation ago where “experts” were either local, or unavailable. The ‘net is shrinking my world, in a positive way. Now to find some more questions to ask.
