Straight into the salt water soup

Sure, we’re new to the neighbourhood, but the novelty still hasn’t worn off. Every morning, when any of the three looks out the south windows towards open water, we’re enthralled. The view is different, every day. No need to hang paintings; just stare out and breathe deeply.

Getting access to drugs

I’m fascinated by the on-going trial of the senator from here. We’re in Day 55, but that means little. Legal kerfluffle for the first seven weeks. No, the interesting part actually started three days ago, and counting. Wherein the person of interest has decided to start filling pages with his story.

Consulting the “recently crashed” lists

During a lifetime, the average person learns how to do an amazing range of things. Not going to bore you with a partial list, but “it is true”. There. Sometimes, you hear about things that other people are doing, and the first question on the table is “how did they learn to do that“?

Existential crises

Is this a good example of a conditional sentence: “If you sit in the dark in a comfortable chair, with soothing music playing in the background, you will fall asleep.” Even without the question mark, I’ve answered my own question. Scratch another productive evening.

Doubling the height

This afternoon, I succeeded in doubling the height of our Christmas tree-to-be. Found another section in the big cardboard box… Try doing that, you “natural tree” aficionados. I admit that I do envy your balsamic odour, though.

A complicated calendar

“Perhaps… just a small slice of the fruitcake.” No! That’s how the holiday begins, and once you’ve started, you can’t just stop the merry-go-round. I’ll wait; a little longer. The solstice isn’t far off.

Everybody loves a parade

Despite the chilly weather, it’s that time of the year when everybody loves a parade. I knew this, and went along. The regional Santa walk, where every spare emergency vehicle from within a forty-five minute circle is found in the queue. OK, half that; the ocean provides one side of things.

Delayed start on my storm chips

Think I’ll kick back and enjoy some storm chips. Didn’t get around to it, last evening. Distracted; waiting for the rain to change format. And there was the power failure thing. Actually, that pretty much summed up today. Kill the lights, cue the standby, wait for the utility people to do their thing, reset the clocks. Three times…

Off the grid for the morning

I came awake to the sound of the laser printer exercising, but quickly decided that this was a symptom, not a cause. The generator had kicked in with that growl I’m still learning to appreciate, and even though the light was still on in the kitchen, we had moved from grid to self-sufficiency. With my ‘net feed sustained, Twitter confirmed that I had joined a community of close to twenty thousand “in the dark” residents.

Not ready to calculate my total cost

As I stood at the service counter, handing over the required amount for my land taxes (two days late, but not a penny short), I realized something important. I didn’t mind. Not at all. Taxes are the blood of our system, and without them, things collapse. Better accept that I’m not a Libertarian (and certainly not a Republican).
