Adults are just bigger versions of kids

Maybe I need to keep an eye on who/what comes and goes around the property. No need to be paranoid, locking doors and windows, but just be aware. There are strange creatures about…

A move from luxury to welcome

This morning marked the first “real” snowfall since the start of the season. When that snowblowing behemoth turned into the driveway, somewhere before coffee time, the contracted service moved from luxury to downright welcome. If I’d had to face clearing a path with my trusted manual shovel, I might not have had the same sense of seasonal pleasure.

Roll it into a ball

Let’s set the “storm chips” joking aside, although I did buy a packaged potato product while over to the local store this afternoon. It leapt into my arms, along with the milk and other stuff, bought just because the need could arise. We’re on storm alert, and when flurries changed to heavy snowfall around suppertime, the only member of the household who seemed to be offput by the weather was the dog. He HAS to go outside, if you get my drift, into the drift. He doesn’t seem impressed by the experience.

Add some “new” oil, please

The owner’s manual mentions moments like this; what to do when the instrument panel puts up a bright “Service due” label. Go to the garage. It doesn’t elaborate about what might happen if you ignore the label for weeks and weeks (and weeks). Time goes by, OK?

Spotted a member of the chorus

I was awake before the dog. A chorus, outside, before sunrise, and that set his hackles on edge. A quick peek outside, where he raced to the side of the house, shouting at the intruder, which meant that I had to haul him back inside, hand over hand. And then we both headed to the deck door, to see what might be in view. Finally; I have heard the coyotes for months, and today I watched one cross the back yard on his/her way to someplace else. No signposts…

The goo pit

What day is it? I was warned that this would happen; without the regulation of a job/routine, the weekend never really ends. Or, as one of the Downton set was heard to say, “What is a weekend?” I like the feeling, but there are moments of dizziness.

Going down the road

I’ve spent a lot of time “on the road”; over the last thirty years, I averaged an easy fifteen hours a week. Not enough to compare to a long-haul trucker, or a hack driver, but in my eyes, a lot of time. However, my closest companion will quickly correct the false impression I’ve given with three simple words: “Not the driver”. As if being a passenger makes the experience less valuable. Hah!

If the only good battery (was a dead battery)

Happened to listen to the news, this evening, and came away with the impression that we’re heading into the dark ages. At least, if you happen to use battery operated devices while away from home.

When the snow falls, down there

Do you remember the terrible storm we had? Actually, no. Once you’ve cleaned up the mess, life goes on. We do try to name the memorable ones, but (like faces from my Grade one class), little memory subsists after a short period of time.

Planning for a green future

What if our lives are really just the video for an endless playlist of mediocre songs? This morning, I had the idea that I could head to the city, get some things done and be home in time for an early supper. And then, a song: “Should I stay or should I go?”
