Am I ready? I guess…

If I only knew how, I’d start some kind of countdown running. After all, the calendar changes in less than five hours. Am I ready? I guess…

My first book

It depends on the question. If asked “What is the last book you read?’, most of us will pause, pensively, before responding with something particular. If asked “What is the only book you’ve read?”… don’t go there; too sad to contemplate. And for the easy one “What is the first book you read?”, especially if you lived where I’ve lived, the response is simple. It was one of the variations of this book.

Familiar is not always popular

Started watching a historical documentary, this afternoon. The seeds of what would become the familiar music of my life; I hesitate to use the term “popular”, only because musical tastes are far from universal. And there’s the question…

Sell him a necktie

Thankfully, I never tried to make my life in “sales”. I’m not cut out for it, if the latest Netflix feed to our house, Paradise, can serve as a reference. Viscerally unable to lie to a client, I am. Willing to teach the right way (or product choice); in spades. My children would have had a hungry upbringing, if I had been required to cajole dollars out of other people’s pockets.

Like a cloak of invisibility

This time, the forecast was accurate. Snow started falling around daybreak, and as I write, things continue. Calmly. This is a fine powder; exactly what a skier might wish for. I’m a flatlander, so I’ll never know more. Instead, we waited until after lunch, and made a short trip to the beach.

Encouraged to rest, often

So, what did you do today? Nothing. And yesterday? Nothing. What’s planned for tomorrow? Nothing. (I sense a trend developing here).

Wrong number, calling from where?

Another of the “big” holiday meals is now over. Except for dessert. That, too, shall follow.

This is the first truly green Christmas I’ve seen in years. I know, I know; global warming doesn’t work that way, but this is the mildest one in many a season. People were out walking on local beaches this afternoon. In T-shirts. That’s better than with a parka and snowshoes, right?

All is calm

A familiar melody, with familiar words. The third line, in particular, seems pertinent: “All is calm”. That’s the summation of life in the country. Just a year ago, we were still in the metropolitan mode, with the clan assembled in the common area. This time around, fewer of “the team” are present, but we hold to the same fundamentals.

Shopping for essentials

On the evening news, a story about a robbery on the Rock. No need to get into specifics, but the thieves took everything: furniture, gifts and the dog. Right there, I knew who was to blame. The Grinch.

Tame the sump

The news coverage of the PM’s wife (or more accurately, her sense of fashion) is a sign of how much the country needs distraction. I’m at ease with dressing everyone in comfortable sweatsuits; if others get a glow from seeing expensive duds, then go for it. But, a spread in Vogue? Didn’t Madonna give us a song and dance routine for that, already?
