From time to time, the Google logo changes. Serves as a shout out to special anniversaries. Today, this Island took notice, because our own avatar was highlighted, several times. By tomorrow, there’ll be something else, but today, we applauded, locally.

Put into a contest between the Grey Cup and Netflix, I’m a captive audience – to a detective series. I’ll do my own reseach, as the score is available on the news sites. The only thing missing will be, well, the game. Maybe next year.

Take a moment, and imagine what puts you outside your “comfort zone”. Today, I touched the edge of mine; went to a Christmas Craft Fair. I’ve never wanted to own stuffed styrofoam Santas, or personalized tree ornaments. The idea of a table centre piece in the form of a wreath woven from evergreen branches, encircling an oversize candle is akin to finding new ways to meet the local firefighting crew. But, sometimes…

This afternoon, with the thermometer edging into double-digit territory, I realized that this might be the last hurrah before winter. Not much time remaining for important tasks, such as burying about 25 meters of coaxial cable. Best to get on task. The shovel made it easy to cut a slit trench, albeit somewhat “off” from the ideal of a straight line (I blame the slight curve in the blade). Down on my knees to get my fingers dirty, pushing the wire down and under. Not something cosmetically driven, this job. More an effort to prevent the local fauna acquiring a taste for black poly.

In the city, finding a new site via its address is actually a simple task. The numbers run in predictable directions, at predicable intervals. After dark, the street lights provide enough of a glow that the tourist can usually locate a target. Here in the country, a different skill set is required.

Supposed to be warm tomorrow. That could be important, if I decide to try modelling wind-driven rain without coating the side of the house in a layer of ice.

Akin to an ancient warrior, about to return to the field after decades of absence, I prepared myself. Laundered my garments, bathed in the local stream (of hot water). Prepared my armour, which came down to finding where my helmet had been packed and checking to see if the leather gauntlets still fit. Set aside coins, in case I had to pay due to the gods of the city (parking gods, in particular). With all in order, I set off for the metropolis, alone.

As part of an ongoing mission, I had the camera out, last evening. Capturing images of a wet piece of windowsill, to be then sent to the two mailboxes of the contractor. With a “read” return, of course. Both bells rang, this morning, quickly followed by a promise to visit and rectify the ongoing problem, this week. I’m willing to stay close to the place, if this actually gets me some satisfaction. On the other hand, if the next four days are just a cooling off exercise… well, we’d better hope for a cold snap. This has been dragging on for about six months.

Dear Dog. Please consider this letter as an invitation to dialogue. We’ve got certain issues that remain unresolved; I’ll try to maintain a polite tone, in keeping with our long term agreement to share space.

Back in the spring of 1972, I purchased my first bicycle. Used, but useful. Daily fun until an unfortunate accident (still wear my scars). The bike was beyond repair, so I saved my pennies for several months (things were cheaper back then) and replaced the pile of scrapped steel with something brand new. Faster. Yellow.
