Based on great expectations

How best to record today? I’ll go with the title of a famous book: Great Expectations. Not knowing what, or who, exactly might grace our threshold, it was incumbent on the family to be well prepared.

Preparing for hungry hordes

On the eve of the eve, the question had to be asked: How can we attract more visitors to our door, to receive gifts of candy? Last year, we failed miserably and had to eat all the candy ourselves…

A gale of wind

Midmorning, the winds peaked at 63 kph. Qualifies as gale force (barely). The rain made us more aware of things, I think. Coupled with the rain collector turning 180 degrees on the mast… Just to say that this is the best wind day for the station, ever!

Racing against the weather

When I actually went to find that magic lug nut key, it didn’t take long. Safe inside the car, etc. However, the other nuts are doing just fine, so I’ll leave them in place until some time when I’m really bored and it’s very warm outside. Translation: not this season.

Tires and tubers

The dog and I arrived at the garage at the appointed (early) hour. Time to let someone with a proper lift and an air compressor mount the winter tires. Close call; the “magic” key to the long lug nuts is MIA. Probably donated to the cause of my last tire place…

A goal followed by a plan

Not sure where I saw it, but the phrase involved “setting a goal and making a plan”. In that order. So, I did.

Spotting whatever whenever

It might be the cooling air, outside. Or the sudden availability of pre-packaged “stew veggies”, but the call has gone out to prepare for winter. A sudden interest in canning, rather than simply buying stuff in cans. A desire to plug in the basement freezer and “chill”. Maybe some oversized meal preps, to give us something to put in the freezer beyond extra electrical charges.

A prize among the knicks and knacks

Once you’ve defined a problem, finding the solution gets a whole lot easier. That’s how we handled our bean dilemma. You see, over the last decade, our coffee beans have been ground “in store”. After all, anyone that prepares tons of fresh roast for sale gets used to doing things right. Right?

On a trip to the city, what do you do?

With .the working class hero out the door before my wakeup call, I decided to make a solo run to the city. The usual reasons…

Play the ferry game

The phone call was important. Not to me, directly, but still… an offer of work for son #3, locally. That’s the first nibble in more than four months, although the search process has been hampered by a lack of transportation and “flying under the radar”. After all, if nobody knows you’re there.
