A prize among the knicks and knacks

posted in economy |

Once you’ve defined a problem, finding the solution gets a whole lot easier. That’s how we handled our bean dilemma. You see, over the last decade, our coffee beans have been ground “in store”. After all, anyone that prepares tons of fresh roast for sale gets used to doing things right. Right?

Down here, we haven’t found our preferred dealer. Forced back to the supermarket, the choice lies between bags of pre-ground and bags of beans. You can’t make a good cup of coffee from the unground bean. Just saying… At home, we tried various methods. The hammer and anvil gives an uneven result. The Magic Bullet is anything but. That neat little manual grinder works, as long as the queue for a cup remains short.

This morning, our busy social schedule required that we make an appearance at a local second-hand sale/fundraiser. A chance for the neighbours to see us, up close. And, by chance, some of the tables of gently preowned goods had kitchen appliances. Including, to our joy, a “burr coffee grinder”. I won’t get technical, but this is something from our want list.

The price? Ten. That’s it. Sold! We bought a few other knicks and knacks, but this was the prize. At home, coffee with flavour. This might get us through the winter.

A final lawn cut day. No, I’m a spectator to the cause, but I provide necessary technical assistance (scraping grass crap from underneath, and hooking up a hose line to clean away the traces of everything else). Must look for a pressure washer, for next season.
